I am 52 years old with sensitive skin that is prone to occasional rosacea flare-ups. It usually manifests as small, sometimes itchy red bumps that can stick around for days. I also get sporadic facial flushing, and the capillaries in my upper cheeks can get enlarged and reddened. I was curious to see how the Luzern Laboratories Serum Absolut RC ($95) would work in comparison to other treatments I have used. Before testing Serum Absolut RC, I was using E’Shee Cellular Repair and an anti-redness Mega Mushroom Serum from Andrew Weil, both of which I discontinued use of during the trial.

According to the brand, this formula combines a state-of-the-art skin normalizing neuropeptide, time-released anti-inflammatory, anti-couperose extracts, barrier-repairing lipids and antioxidants. The neuropeptide is palmitoyl tripeptide-8, and it is designed to prevent redness and swelling. Niacinamide and wheat germ extract are included to restore the skin’s protective barrier. For reducing redness, horse chestnut and cypress seed extract are used because they are shown to tighten the walls of small blood vessels.

At this point, I would say that Serum Absolut RC is just as good as my previous regimen when it comes to redness prevention. While it does not actually prevent rosacea bumps from forming, it does treat them effectively. I generally see some improvement almost immediately, and the bumps are completely gone in a day or so. I also feel that my skin tone is more even and the capillaries are not showing. However, this product does not avert overall facial flushing.

I should also note that I got my eyebrows waxed a couple weeks into testing this serum and my skin reacted badly. I was left with sore little red bumps along the tops of both brows, and tried using the Luzern serum to quell them. It did lessen the redness somewhat, but the bumps still lasted for a week or so.

Overall, I would say this is a solid though not miraculous product. Serum Absolut RC works well for the treatment of irritation, but did not keep my rosacea from reoccurring throughout the trial. It is easy to use and non-irritating, and it looks and feels very nice on my skin after application — no shine or stickiness. I might well buy it again, as it’s certainly cheaper than the E’Shee serums and seemingly just as effective.

Thank you Sarah for an objective review. Sounds as if my quest for the ultimate anti-redness serum is not over.
