I have never been a fan of shower gels. I prefer soap bars. Recently however, I've made the switch. I'm not sure why. Well, that's not entirely true. I go back and forth. Shower gels are kind of like men's grooming in general: they really didn't have much presence in the market until this past decade. Now almost every brand has a shower gel (or a range of them). And it's going to remain popular, especially next year when the sign of Aquarius is the celestial favorite (random, I know, but there's going to be a strong "green movement," mark my words). Eco-friendly hotels (from budget to high-end) have already given the boot to the bar, replacing it with pump gels (and shampoos) in the bathrooms.
