An effective lotion that successfully targets and treats skin conditions on problem areas

Worked well on light scarring, spider veins and an itchy rash

There are potential irritants among the preservatives

With some small thread veins on my legs, the odd bruise, some skin redness and an itchy rash, I felt that I would be a good candidate for Medik8 Red Alert For Body ($75 in the shop). And I pleased to report that this unusual body treatment lotion with bearberry and teprenone turned out to be a good candidate for me.

I am already a fan of Medik8 Red Alert ($60 in the shop) for the face and use it almost every day where it keeps rosacea and thread veins on the apples of my cheeks at bay. The body version proved just as useful. It is the only thing that has worked on a itchy rash I had and a scar/bruise that wouldn’t go away, faded considerably. I also saw progress with a couple of spider veins.

As with Medik8 Red Alert for face the active is teprenone, which is supposed to stabilize the telomeres and prevent cell death. And, as such, may be a useful anti-aging active. It is also said to mend broken veins and calm rosacea. However, Medik8 Red Alert Professional Strength For Body has some additional ingredients that are of great interest.

One is bearberry, which has recently got some attention from Dr Oz. Bearberry (a berry beloved by bears) contains arbutin, which is a natural skin brightener. Bearberry also has sun protection properties and may reduce the degree of skin tanning after sun exposure.

Menaquinone is vitamin K2. Because vitamin K is needed for blood coagulation, it is thought that it will help mend broken capillaries.  Another broken vein helper is horse chestnut as these trees (particularly the seeds) contain a saponin called escin. This is supposed to strengthen veins and capillaries by blocking an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which can breakdown of proteoglycans (part of the structure of capillary walls).

I should point out, however, that I don’t have much scarring and the spider veins are few and spidery -  by which I mean that I don’t have experience of how well Medik8 Red Alert Professional Strength For Body for deeper scars or visible broken veins.

My rash was likely soothed by the presence of kiwi seed oil, which is used to treat skin infections, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Meanwhile antioxidants are provided by cypress leaf extract (said to be more potent than vitamin E) and linden extract.

Medik8 doesn’t formulate for purists and there are the usual suspects and potential irritants among the preservatives. Overall, though, Medik8 Red Alert Professional Strength For Body is an excellent product for treating skin conditions. One last point I should mention is that this is not an overall body lotion, but is meant for targeting and treating problem areas.

I agree Robin, for bruises Medik8 Red Alert is pretty impressive. I had a burn mark on my wrist (cooking injury) and perpetual bruising on my shins from bootcamp and trail running and Red Alert deals with them all. I bought a second bottle for my husband for similar purposes and he has been wowed.

I purchased this product in the hopes that it would fade some superficial spider veins on my legs. I've been using it for about 2 months now and haven't seen any change in the appearance of the veins. However, this product works really well for bruises. I mountain bike so I always have mysterious bruises and this fades them in a couple of days. Even my husband noticed that a bruise I had on the back of my leg was healing quicker than normal. I will purchase Medik8 Red Alert for Body again for this reason alone and recommend it if you are one of those people who bruise easily. It absorbs into the skin, leaves no sticky feeling and has no smell.
