Might be best for first-time retinol users who don't have sensitive skin

Is easily spreadable and slightly moisturizing

Does not stack up to my personal favorite

Medik8 Retinol 6TR ($65) is a .06% retinol serum for overnight use. It's recommended for improving the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots and overall skin appeal. This is the stronger of two retinol applications that Medik8 offers.

The TR of 6TR stand for "time release." The retinol molecules are said to be encapsulated in such a way that allows them to slowly work their magic as the night progresses. There is additional vitamin E in the form of tocopheryl acetate for retinal stabilization. Time release works by embedding the active ingredient — in this case, retinol — in a matrix of insoluble substances. The retinol finds its way out through holes in the matrix.

There are only a few other ingredients listed in this formula, the main one being safflower seed oil. It has the consistency of a facial oil and is scentless. It is applied with an elegant dropper, four drops per night. I dripped it directly on to my face in four spots. It was easy to spread and this was enough product to cover my entire face.

Medik8 recommends slowly increasing your use until you are able to apply it every night. I was already using a Vitamin A product, so I jumped right to every night.

I liked the minimal packaging and small bottle. It didn't take up too much room in the bathroom. The oil base made it easily spreadable and slightly moisturizing. I didn't experience any negative side effects.

And I didn't see any improvement over the product I'd been using previously. For overall skin toning along with firming, I preferred Arcona's Advanced A serum, which uses retinaldehyde and includes other actives. Medik8 Retinol 6TR might appeal to someone who is a first-time retinol user, who doesn't have sensitive skin.
