I was chosen to test drive Medik8 Retinol 6TR ($65), a super-charged, vitamin A serum that is a time-released version of their 3% retinol product. This newest edition has the added benefit of vitamin E, which boosts the product’s stability and effectiveness.

Medik8’s website claims benefits of this product include a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and an acceleration in cellular turn-over, brought on by stimulating collagen and elastin. It also claims to reduce sagginess and increase firmness. And while I did experience smoother skin, I did not notice any discernible increase in firmness. Medik8 Retinol 6TR is recommended for those people in their 30s and older and I am about 60 years old.

A word of caution: if you have not previously used a retinol product (like their 3% retinol formula), do not begin using this product on a nightly, or even a every-other-night frequency. It is a strong product, with potentially dramatic results. However, it goes on like a smooth oil, with no burning whatsoever. You may be fooled into thinking your skin could tolerate nightly applications, but don’t push your luck. I found a twice per week regimen provided me with positive results, without irritation. Live by the adage “less is more” and you’ll see the results without wasting product or experiencing any irritation.

I tested this product for about a month and am just now beginning to see my desired results. I am noticing an increase in smoothness in my skin, but I think that my twice weekly usage may be producing slower results, but I do not mind waiting. This is not a quick-fix product, so be patient; you didn’t develop those little lines overnight, and they won’t disappear that quickly either. I used a Sunday/Thursday application schedule and had no peeling or irritation. Do not use an alpha hydroxy product in conjunction with this, as they will cancel each other out, meaning you will not get the benefits of either. Cleanse your face, use a toner and then the Medik8 Retinol 6TR. The website says you can use a moisturizer over that, once it has absorbed. On the nights I used it, I didn’t use anything on top of it.

I think this is a quality product, as I have liked all the products I’ve tried in this line. I will continue to use it twice weekly, and will update this review, should I observe any additional improvement. I think it is a product that slowly improves the skin’s appearance and am hoping to see a little increased firmness. Just remember that a little goes a long way, and only use it twice per week.
