A refreshing, soothing product to boost your facial routine

As I began testing Michael Todd True Organics Blue Green Algae Toner ($18/7.8oz) and thinking about my own skincare routine, I wondered how many people actually use a toner in their daily routine. That curiosity led me to conduct a very informal survey to share with you. Over the past four weeks I’ve selected a few people each day to ask two questions: Do you use a toner, and why or why not? Surprisingly, out of a total of 76 randomly chosen people of various ages (45 women and 31 men) only 11 women and 9 men used a toner. The women used a toner to combat oiliness and the men used it after shaving. Those who didn’t use a toner said they didn’t think they needed one.

Almost all of those who didn’t use toner also asked if they should. For me, the answer is yes. All skin types can benefit as toners work to remove oil, dirt and traces of cleanser left behind, maintain a healthy pH level, moisturize and rehydrate skin, and most importantly for men, it can soothe post-shave irritation. For all these reasons I added a toner to my daily routine a few years ago and found that it improved my skin.

After visiting Michael Todd True Organics website, I found a lot to like, including the fact that the products are “made in the U.S. with organic ingredients, without added water and free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance or artificial dyes.” This toner’s ingredient list begins with aloe vera leaf juice (for its soothing, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties), so you’re not paying for a product that’s mostly water or alcohol (another plus). There’s also willowbark and tea tree oil to help heal and keep skin clear and I like the hydrating benefits of hyaluronic acid.

I have to say that I was pretty much hooked from the first use. This toner really refreshed my skin after cleansing and soothed after morning shaving to prevent irritation. It worked great to remove oil and the “midday shine,” leaving my face feeling completely clean without any stickiness. It has also helped to prevent breakouts.

The gender neutral fragrance is a refreshing and very light botanical lavender that’s gone almost as soon as you apply it. Although I’ve used it generously three times daily over the past four weeks, about two-thirds of the 7.8-oz bottle still remains, proof that it’s a good value for the money at only about $6 per month. Recommended for all skin types by Michael Todd, this toner worked perfectly in every way for me and I highly recommend it.

Wow, this product was looking good until I got to the Phenoxyethanol, a known carcinogenic. Why do manufacturers try to harm us? They have a great product with some awesome ingredients then throw in the nasty/nasties. Very frustrating.

Add me to your poll too. I never used much toner until recently, thinking (mistakenly that they were drying and pointless). Now that I know better I have come to love several including Arcona's and La Vie Celeste. There's no doubt that I'll be giving this one a try too.

Mark! Add me to your poll in the plus column. I use toner every day. Currently I use two (Dermalogica Age Smart Antioxidant Hydramist and Hyaluronic Acid w/ Matrixyl 3000 Spray) religiously, and a third (Living Nature Hydrating Toning Gel) if I think I need a burst of hydration. In fact I spritz my face multiple times a day since I seldom have makeup on and can do that.

Thank you for pointing out an important part of "loving the skin we're in!" ~jk
