Recently, I was given a full-size tester of Mineral Hygienics Sheer Perfection Mineral Finish in Translucent ($18/20 g). I have oily/combination skin, so I always set my liquid foundation with a powder. However, most that I’ve tried tend to accentuate dry spots or cause a white cast in photos (Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Powder is an infamous culprit for creating this effect in many photos of celebrities, such as Nicole Kidman and Ashley Judd).

Having never heard of Mineral Hygienics before, I did some researching on the brand before testing out the powder. All of their products are “100% mineral makeup” and promise longer lasting and better coverage with fewer ingredients. Since this is a translucent powder and not a colored foundation, I cannot report on the “better coverage” part of their mission, but I can say that this is truly an invisible powder that doesn’t wash me out or impart any whiteness. All skin colors should be able to use the Translucent shade without any issue.

The packaging for this product is like any other mineral powder: a small container with a lid and sifter. I do wish that there was some sort of lock for the sifter because, as it is now, it definitely isn’t travel-friendly. A mess is nearly unavoidable whenever I open it, causing me to lose some of the product.

However, I can overlook this because the powder performs amazingly well! When I apply using a fluffy brush, it sets my foundation into place and gives me a flawless and nearly poreless finish (without looking flakey or cakey). It blends in smoothly and is completely undetectable (not even with flash photography!). Mineral Hygienics Sheer Perfection Mineral Finish keeps my face shine-free longer than other powders that I have used (though I still need a quick blot around lunch time) and my makeup fresher looking come the end of the day. I attribute the product’s success to the inclusion of rice powder, which was first used in cosmetics in the 16th century by Japanese geishas to achieve their trademark porcelain-skinned appearance. Research has found that rice powder is similar in chemical structure to ceramide, which help skin’s production of collagen. Additionally, rice powder has acne healing properties, which makes this powder a perfect option for breakout-prone skin.

I do wish that silica was lower on the list of ingredients or not on it at all since it’s a potential irritant. But considering that it hasn’t caused my sensitive skin any issues and cheap packaging aside, Mineral Hygienics Sheer Perfection Mineral Finish is an exceptional finishing powder at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend it!
