This hydrating cream works at the cellular level to help protect the skin from environmental aggressors while also helping to diminish the damage that's already done

Hydrates, softens the look of lines and protects the skin

By Aida H.

I am very picky about what I use on my 60-something, dry skin and am always on the lookout for face products that can both hydrate and work on wrinkles — in other words, a good multi-tasker! So, I was excited to test MitoQ Active Protection Daily Defense Cream ($135 in the shop). The ingredients in this cream are said to target the skin's mitochondria and help fight against the oxidative stress that plagues our skin constantly, causing signs of aging. Over time, they work to make the skin feel smoother, firmer and more hydrated.

This cream is suitable for all skin types. For me, this usually means that the cream isn't hydrating enough. In the case of this MitoQ day cream, though, there is plenty of hydration and the plumping action helps the skin feel silky-smooth. The cream itself is midweight and sinks into the skin quickly, unlike some creams that just sit on the top of the surface. The MitoQ day cream dries down to a very natural and soft finish that lasts all day long.

The directions say to apply it by pressing the cream onto the face, throat and décolletage area. The pressing prevents micro-tears to the skin that can occur with rubbing. Although I was trying this product for four weeks, I can honestly say that I could feel a difference in my skin's hydration with the first application! IMHO there are very few products that can deliver like that — on the first try!  And the hydration lasted throughout the day. I haven't tried the brand's night cream yet, but plan to do so. I think that in hot and humid weather, using the day cream at night might work well if the night cream was too heavy.

Inside you will find the brand’s proprietary complex, MitoQ, which was formulated for the cult-fave original serum. It works on the skin at the cellular level to restructure and rejuvenate. It also features the powerful wrinkle-smoothing peptide Martrixyl Synthe6. Hyaluronic acid locks in moisture to hydrate and plump up skin. Finally, there are a handful of antioxidants like niacinamide and pomegranate. There’s nothing to really dislike about this formula; it’s free of parabens, phthalate and fragrance.

I should mention that the directions also say to apply the MitoQ Serum before applying the day cream. I can only imagine that this would just pack more antioxidants into the application which would increase the overall benefit to the face. Again, the goal of the brand is to reduce the oxidative stress to the skin and reduce wrinkles. With continued use, this cream should help prevent fine lines from forming and I can confirm that I did not notice any new lines during the four-week test period. The existing ones looked lessened while using it, too.

If someone's skin feels very dry and thirsty, or if you are looking for a good day cream that doubles as an anti-ager, I would recommend giving the MitoQ Active Protection Daily Defense Cream a try. I plan to invest in the serum, day and night cream and will report back on how they work together.
