I was quite excited to have been asked to review a new product from MitoQ, the Active Protection Daily Defense Cream AM ($135 in the shop). I’m 56 and have dry skin with those darned marionette wrinkles around my mouth and the elevens getting comfortable between my eyes. Even so, I am told that I look much younger than my age, and though I’m very happy about that, I was looking for something that would make my face feel softer, smoother and more hydrated.

I realize that a moisturizer won’t necessarily get rid of the wrinkles, but hydration is a step toward keeping them at bay a little longer. Receiving the cream, I went immediately to the MitoQ website and read about the company, which seeks to support health — not just beauty — by addressing the needs of the body’s mitochondria. They, and I’ve heard Marta as well, refer to mitochondria as the power plant of our bodies’ cells. They generate energy that allow our cells to do their jobs. Regarding skin, it would be to protect the body from external oxidative stressors, among other things, but also the free radicals that come from the production of that energy within our own bodies.

The Active Protective Daily Defense Cream AM comes in a white box with touches of berry; it’s a nice, refined look. The pearly white bottle contains 1.69 fluid ounces of product in a bottle with a locking pump, which I like. The bottle is opaque so, unfortunately, you cannot tell how much is left, though that is not a deal breaker for me. The product itself is a soft yellow and is rather thick — probably why it’s called a cream instead of a lotion. It has a very subtle scent that dissipates quickly.

The active ingredients include their own MitoQ complex, an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in mitochondria to increase energy in skin cells. It also helps stimulate collagen and elastin. Niacinamide is included to increase elasticity and reduce inflammation while Matrixil Synth’6 reduces signs of fatigue, such as dark circles and dull skin, and premature aging (think fine lines) over time. Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, attracting moisture and temporarily plumping skin.

The cream is a bit thick, making it a little difficult to spread. But it is a face cream, and I got it done every day for going on two months now. That it’s lasted me this long, using it from my décolletage up, is very pleasing. And it did the job of moisturizing. I felt comfortably hydrated all day, and maybe the thickness of it was the barrier my face needed from environmental aggressors like pollution. Though, I will say that I missed not having the convenience of a sunscreen included in the product. Most of the time I relied on the SPF provided in my foundation, which, by the way, went on just fine every time — no pilling or separating. Overall, my skin has been soft and supple while using this day cream.
