add a pop of color with makeup

As we get older, we sometimes find that the makeup that's been working for us doesn't quite do the trick anymore. New challenges like drier skin and fine lines may require us to rethink our techniques and products. As I've written about previously, I actually find that I use less makeup on a day-to-day basis than I used to, but I still love to kick it up a notch for special occasions — or even when I'm just going out with friends. Adding a pop of color is a great way to flatter maturing skin and give you a healthy, natural look.

When I was younger, my combination skin leaned more towards the oily side. Nowadays it tends to be on the dry side, so I know my once-beloved powder foundation would only accentuate fine lines. Better options include a mineral foundation like Altruist Satin Mineral Foundation from W3LL People. It comes in eight different shades so you're sure to find your perfect match, and its lightweight formulation contains aloe, chamomile and green tea to nourish your skin. For super-light yet effective coverage, try Osmotics Inner Light Complexion Enhancer ($30). It does not impart a tint but instead, uses soft focus pigments to create a light-defusing layer. It helps diminish lines and wrinkles and gives skin a natural glow.

If you need a little more coverage, try a BB cream (which stands for "beauty balm" or "blemish balm"). jane iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream ($48 in the shop) comes in six different shades to cover imperfections and also has a mineral SPF 25. For even more coverage, a CC or "color correction" cream will do the trick. Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream ($39) provides mineral tinted coverage that also hydrates and protects skin with SPF 30.

To touch up dark spots or redness, I need a good concealer that won't cake or smear by the end of the day. RMS Beauty "Un" Cover Up Concealer is a lightweight, hydrating concealer that is especially good for aging skin, since it doesn't cake in lines or wrinkles. Use a translucent finishing powder like W3LL People Realist X to mattify the skin and eliminate shine. It contains aloe and chamomile to soothe skin and green tea to give an antioxidant boost.

If you have a pale complexion, you might like the warm glow that a bronzer can provide — W3LL People Hedonist Mineral Bronzer gives a natural sun-touched look. I have an olive complexion, so when I need a pop of color, I just opt for a soft, subtle blush. Purist Mineral Blush, also by W3LL People, is formulated with pure pigments and its application can be adjusted for a more natural or more dramatic look. RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek hydrates and protects with mineral color that can be used on both lips and cheeks.

Overly harsh eye makeup can be aging, so you want to step away from the bold black eyeliner. Instead, enhance your eye color with flattering eyeshadow shades and use mascara to add length and volume to thinning lashes. W3LL People Elitist Mineral Eye Shadow comes in pretty, long-lasting shades like Pink Champagne, Gilded Forest Green, Luminous Copper, Satin Apricot and Glistening Taupe. jane iredale Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara ($33) actually nourishes your lashes with algae-extract and vitamin B.

Full healthy brows can make you look younger, so if you need some help in that department, try a growth-stimulating product like Truth In Aging's own Truth Vitality Brow Empower ($39 in the shop). Its exclusive formula uses a proprietary copper peptide complex, vitamin B5 and emu oil to encourage healthy brow growth. For more immediate help, W3LL People Capitalist Mineral Brow Pigment will instantly define and fill in sparse brows.

My final step (and sometimes my only step when I'm really lazy) is lip color. Dark, matte lipstick can make lips look thinner and can bleed into lip lines, but really pale lipstick won't give your face enough color. Juice Beauty's Reflecting Lip Gloss Kit ($36 in the shop) and Conditioning Lip Color ($18) provide a hint of color in flattering tones such as Champagne, Pink, Guava and Fig, and keep lips hydrated with fruit seeds and natural oils. For some more oomph, jane iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper ($25) comes in nine shades and helps plump lips with mint and ginger. It also softens and hydrates lips with shea butter, sunflower oil, aloe vera and time-released peptides.
