For the past month I’ve been using Naturalis Organic Easy Cream Anti-Ageing Cream, Natural Lifting Effect ($65), made in Italy by Naturalis Cose di Natural (kind of a mouthful, let’s call it Naturalis for short). As per instructions, I used the cream nightly for a month and therein lay the first of two lessons learned on this maiden review: turns out I’m impatient, I ought to give products more of a chance to prove themselves because, even if at first they seem dreadful, things may be well worth the wait. More on that later.

According to the insert, this was my personal dream cream: I love organic and “natural lifting” is exactly what my over-worked, partied-out and entirely under-slept eyes need. I’m thirty-plus years old, but thanks to a French-Canadian mother who drilled into me the importance of sun block and night crème, as far as you’re concerned, I’m “closer to 30 than 25” and there I intend to hover for as long as I can. But 2011 has been busy and stressful, and it’s starting to show: under-eye crepiness, fine lines when I smile and – on the wrong day after the wrong night – bags.  The lie, like my skin, is wearing thin.

So did Naturalis work? Well, in so far as acne is youthful, the effect was immediate! I woke up on day three with five zits sprayed across my cheeks and forehead. The bright, ripe and painful kind: “pushing 30? Why sweetie, you look like you’re barely outta college!”

But the in the same way that certain purveyors of fine retinols insist that you remain calm while their product burns your face off, I decided to soldier on through the pimples because I believe in second chances and because Naturalis contains “Jaluronic Acid” (that’s sexy accented Italian for sodium hyaluronate, which BTW Marta has a great post on, which I hoped might be as firming and fabulous as they say.

So lesson one: patience is indeed a virtue!  Along with sodium hyaluronate the cream contains some great ingredients, including apricot kernel extract, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil and shea butter, all certified organic and all packed with EFAs and various vitamins, including E, A, D, a few Bs and C.  And Naturalis also boasts beauty’s newest darling, argan oil – alas not organic. In between my pimples, I did notice an improvement in the texture and resilience of my tired skin, especially around my protesting lower eyelids. And the zits cleared after a week, while the improvement to my skin stayed strong and steady. I should also note that it did not clog my pores (no black-pepper spots). After using Naturalis, not only did my smile crinkles disappear, my skin looked more tightly knit. Crepey is a good adjective, but you could also say my under eye area was like worn-down fabric, the knees of jeans; now it seems thickened, tightened, restored.

The other thing Naturalis did was smooth my forehead. I’m not bothered by my forehead lines, they’re not deep so I wasn’t on the market for improvement in that area. But now that I’ve got a smoother brow, naturally I’m quite pleased!

The instructions said to rub the cream in until it disappears and that was lesson two. The nightly mini-massages were relaxing, my face tingled pleasantly (presumably from the increased blood flow) and more cream went into my skin than onto my pillow case. I do think that the thorough rubbing-in enhanced Naturalis’ efficacy and it’s a habit I intend to integrate into my skin-care routine.

Naturalis is lightweight and absorbs quickly. Because it’s not too thick or overly greasy, it also works well during the day and under-make-up. And it has staying power: Sodium hyaluronate is said to offer only temporary plumping, however my skin was not deflated at day’s end, and I stepped out of the shower still-smooth and hydrated.

Naturalis has effectively arrested and reversed the damage I’ve noticed this past year. If you can tolerate some initial acne, I say buy it!
