Broccoli is the new sunscreen

December 28, 2007 Reviewed by Marta 0 Comments

Researchers at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore have demonstrated that broccoli extract is a highly effective sun protection ingredient. The exciting thing about it is that doesn't provide a barrier to UV like traditional sunscreens but it stimulates the cell's own protective mechanisms.

Scientists believe this ingredient will revolutionize sunscreen products.

According to a trial published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the broccoli extract - called Sulforaphane reduces UV damage by 37%. The effects are also supposed to be long lasting because Sulforaphane regulates proteins of the cell's innate protective systems that keep on working long after the extract disappears from the system.

Expect broccoli extract to be added to sunscreens in the coming year.
