Some people are pretty strict about their grooming regimen. While we're obsessed with our face and body, we forget other important parts. Well, sometimes (Kiss Down Under is the exception that proves the rule).

Anyway, just as important are our underarms and what we put under our arms. While I generally switch back and forth with Dermalogica Enivronmental Control and Origins—two safe, clean favorites—I like to browse other products that may or may not substitute. I came across Nickel's Cold Sweat ($17).

I can see how a super-active guy would be into Nickel Cold Sweat. It definitely cools, thanks to the menthol. It's so cool in fact, you wouldn't want to use it on a cold day. When I tried it, it got real clammy up there. (In fact, the directions suggest you keep it in the fridge!). The deodorant also passed as refreshing. But if we were comparing this to toothpaste, it wasn't in that just-brushed-clean-feeling kind of way. Nickel Cold Sweat lingered in my underarms, and didn't feel so great, as in I sort of felt it there for hours. I think the point of a deodorant is to keep you fresh without being aware that you are actually wearing something. Of course, it should also prevent you from emitting foul scents. This fragrance was a little overbearing and the feeling of it a little annoying.

I'm glad that Nickel Cold Sweat is free of aluminum salts and alcohol (well, I'm not sure if I should count sorbitol, which is a sugar alcohol). There's even geraniol, a natural antioxidant. But there's also a bunch of parabens (five!) up in there. And weird chemicals. Pardon my French, but Nickel Cold Sweat is a total mind-fuck. It really feels great for a minute but it's not the best for your skin. Yikes, and there's limonene, a scent ingredient known to be pretty toxic. So, guys, big tip of advice: the girls may like the scent (maybe... it actually is awful in my opinion but it is pretty refreshing and somewhat masculine) but Nickel Cold Sweat is ultimately worth two thumbs down.
