The name "Olay" comes from the word "lanolin," a key ingredient in the original Olay products.

Olay became part of Proctor and Gamble and in 1999,  changed their official name to "Olay" from the original "Oil of Olay."

The original packaging for Olay products never mentioned what the contents of package contained.

Olay launched in India in August, 2007.

Olay's slogan is "Love the skin you're in."

Company News/Recent Launches:

Olay recently launched their "Olay for You" iPhone application, which allows users to access Olay's customized skincare consultation service.

Olay's Pro-X Intensive Wrinkle Protocol comes with a guarantee that users will see results.

Olay and Cover Girl recently teamed up to create the Simply Ageless makeup collection.

Olay's Definity Color Recapture was voted Best New Product in a survey by Better Homes and Gardens.

Key Ingredients:

The Olay range is big on niacinamide, a derivative of Vitamin B3 that suppresses melanin from reaching the surface of the skin and protects the skin from further UV damage. It can be found for instance in Olay's Total Effects Eye Transforming Cream and the Pro X range.

Olay's patchouli-scented Botanical Fusion body wash is infused with soy oil.

Olay's Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Daily SPF 15 Lotion contains pro-retinol, beta hydroxy, and vitamin E.

Olay Definity's Penetrating Foaming Cleanser boasts glucosamine and a micro-polishing complex.

TIA's Take:

Olay has a proven history of producing inexpensive and effective products, some of which have been favorably reviewed on this site. Although Olay's products have their face share of silicones and parabens, they should be commended for bringing cutting edge ingredients such as Matrixyl, niacin and L-carnitine to the mass market. The Olay website provides users with the tools to find the right skincare regime for their type of complexion, and provides live online consultations with Olay staffers. The website also provides a long list of ingredients and explanations of their various uses, something rarely found on a traditional beauty website.
