Though it has a combination of fibroblast stimulators, including retinaldehyde and peptides, it did not provide impressive skin rejuvenation

Offered some surface smoothing; non-irritating

No improvement in skin laxity or wrinkles

By Peggy M.

I have sixty-year-old skin that has mild wrinkling and sagging around the jawline. I have been a Tretinoin (prescription-strength Retin-A cream) user for several years, but cut back to once a week usage when asked to test the Osmosis Renew Level 4 Vitamin A Serum ($88).

I used this serum nightly and also on some mornings when I remembered. After washing my face with a mild vitamin C cleanser, I applied it on my face and down my jawline.  Some nights I used a simple night cream about 30 minutes after applying the serum, depending on my schedule and my need for a bit more moisture. In the mornings, I was sure to apply sunscreen about 20 minutes after application.

The product comes in a sealed container with a pump applicator for dispensing. On my first few tries, the pump dripped all over my dresser. The serum has a dark orange gel consistency that I quickly learned to master, though still with the occasional drip if I was not paying attention to the application. Heads up that the product has a somewhat fishy, off-putting scent that required a bit of getting used to. However, it does dissipate once absorbed fully by the skin.

The retinal ingredient used, retinaldehyde, did not irritate my skin. Because of its slower metabolization, treating the skin with retinaldehyde is said to me more tolerable — yet just as effective — as other common forms of vitamin A. Other notable ingredients include hydrating algae extract and hyaluronic acid. In the anti-aging department, it includes lactic acid (a resurfacing alpha hydroxy acid) and skin-restoring niacinamide. It also has the plumping and line-smoothing peptides, caprooyl tetrapeptide-3 and palmitoyl tripeptide-38.

I did notice a small increase in the smoothness of my face, but I must confess that I did not see a big different after using the product for four weeks. There was no tightening of the jowl area or major ironing out of my wrinkles as I had hoped for. I did like the idea of using a serum nightly and perhaps I would see more results with more time. But, honestly, I am inclined to try other products that have a more tolerable scent and better consistency. I did not hate this product, but I was also not terribly impressed.

Thank you Ben, I found your response very interesting and informative and is making me rethink my use of Retin A.

I am the formulator of Renew. Retin A actually thins the skin according to clinical trial results. Using it, even once a week, during the testing of Renew will negate the benefits of Renew. Secondly, if you are just stopping Retin A prior to Renew, the inflammation/swelling/plumping effect of Retin A will subside over a few weeks, so the benefits of Renew will be masked by the deflation of inflamed skin. We recommend a 90 day test in cases like this. Lastly, Osmosis promises permanent collagen generation with Renew but rebuilding significant amounts of collagen is not a 30 day process. I hope readers will take these points into consideration.
