Osmotics Anti-Radical Age Defense Moisture Veil  ($78) is a lightweight moisturizer that fights off free radicals (not to be confused with the Moisture Complex ($111), which Marta recommended for broken capillaries). The impressive ingredients list is cutting edge and contains an array of innovative actives bundled into a serum that not only defends skin against the signs of aging, but also does an excellent job of restoring and maintaining skin’s natural moisture barrier. Per Osmotics, Moisture Veil is the only product on the market to target all three types of free radicals: reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and reactive carbonyl species (RCS) with lipogard, dimethylmethoxy chromanol and aldenine, respectively.

Lipogard combines CoQ10 (aka ubiquinone) and tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) to combat ROS, a term that covers several pro-oxidants and oxygen radicals, and it is probably what most of us think of when free radicals come to mind. ROS is a known culprit behind the formation of wrinkles. Ubiquinone is a potent antioxidant naturally produced by the body that decreases with aging. Its properties allow it to prevent or reduce oxidative damage to tissues and has also been found to assist cells in building collagen and elastin, therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Topical vitamin E has both photo-protective and skin barrier stabilizing properties. It effectively reduces the formation of free radicals upon skin exposure to UVA rays and other sources of skin stress.

RNS are linked to aging because they damage proteins and then the oxidated proteins become inactive and accumulate in cells where they can trigger programmed cell death. One RNS, called peroxynitrite, can cause lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and hyaluronic degradation. Dimethylmethoxy chromanol, otherwise known as the free-radical scavenger lipochroman-6 and teprenone (Renovage) is associated with stabilizing telomeres and, thereby, cell longevity. Lipochroman-6 is a high potency antioxidant that’s believed to inhibit tyrosinase activity and peroxynitrite formation. It effectively targets both RNS and according to one study also effectively targets ROS.

Aldenine combines tripeptide-1 with soy and wheat proteins to combat RCS. Skin collagen is a favored target of the reactive carbonyl and tripeptide-1 mimics the relationship of the growth factors involved in the healing process and synthesis of collagen. Specifically, it is supposed to stimulate the synthesis of collagen I and III, fibronectin and laminin. Aldenine, which protects cells from sunlight and acts as cellular detoxifier, is supposed to be more powerful than carnosine, a powerful antioxidant also included in the formulation for good measure.

Natural materials for UV absorption potential and antioxidant activity have been the subject of much research. Moisture Veil contains a high infusion of watermelon extract (citrullus lanatus extract), a relatively new key skin protective active containing naturally occurring amino acids such as citrulline extracted from watermelons. According to the manufacturer, watermelon plants develop their own defense system under extreme conditions by producing compatible water soluble molecules which easily penetrate skin as they occur naturally in the human body. Studies show that watermelon extract has photo-protective properties as it helps protect against breakdown of DNA caused by UV light and pollution and in vivo tests on humans have shown that the extract protects DNA up to 25%. Research indicates it also reduces the appearance of skin redness after UV irradiation.

Besides the aforementioned, there are plenty of useful ingredients including squalane, ceramide and glycerin. I should also give a shout-out to the paraben alternative, potassium sorbate (which is followed by some not so loved parabens).

I really like the light consistency of this serum, which goes on smoothly and quickly absorbs into skin. It effectively keeps skin hydrated without feeling heavy or greasy and is ideal to wear under makeup. As a previous reviewer noted, “skin is moist and smooth, and makeup application is much easier.” It was recommended for anyone who needs a little extra moisture and wants fast and effective results – I couldn’t agree more! Overall, Moisture Veil is a lovely anti-aging serum with powerful preventative properties.
