As I am approaching middle age (45), I look in the mirror and see the beginning of sags, bags and wrinkles. My skin has definitely lost elasticity and firmness, and that put me on the prowl for a firming serum or lotion. When I was offered the chance to try Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Blue Copper 5 Face Lifting Serum ($75), I gladly accepted the opportunity.
Let me start by saying I have extremely sensitive skin that inevitably breaks out within the first 24 to 48 hours of switching products. I can get rashes of small, irritated bumps, or more likely, gigantic painful red swollen cysts that stay around for months and then leave a pit or scar. I very rarely change facial products, and then only to non-comedogenic, relatively limited ingredients, and for sensitive skin.
For people with sensitive skin, this serum is an absolute dream. I used it nightly after cleansing my face and neck, and didn’t suffer from even one bump, lump, discoloration or redness. This serum is a pleasant baby blue, lightly textured serum that disappears and is absorbed into skin almost instantaneously. It has an extremely light scent, which means there is very little potentially irritating fragrance added.
Speaking of the ingredients list, it’s fairly small, which in general is a good thing for people with sensitive skin. It did contain both methylparaben and propylparaben, which I wasn’t particularly excited to see as parabens may be linked to potential hormonal disruption as well as being estrogenic.
As Osmotics claims: “The lightweight formula combines the anti-aging benefits of copper peptide with the most advanced topical lifting technology available (Matrixyl). Sweet almond proteins provide instant tightening and lifting. Shiitake mushroom extracts enhance the skin’s support structure and helping to prevent and repair thinning and sagging skin.”
I definitely did see an improvement in my skin’s hydration, which was a plus. As far as instant tightening and lifting… I could only see a small improvement (maybe 5%). And I used the serum for six weeks (rather than the usual four), hoping for better results. Regarding reparation of thin and sagging skin – I can’t say I noticed much of a difference there, either.
All in all, I’d give it a “thumbs sideways” – good for hydration, but wouldn’t purchase for firming and lifting sagging skin. For that, I’d go with one of Marta’s Five Best picks.
