Face Care for Men

Those who read my posts know I'm not the biggest fan of drugstore products. So this past weekend, I had a mission. I wanted to find one product that was good enough to recommend for long-term use. I popped into my neighborhood Duane Reade and browsed the men's products. While it was quite a challenge, I decided Real Shaving Company Face Scrub was good enough.

Real Shaving Company is one of the "better" brands carried in drugstores, though that doesn't necessarily mean I fully endorse it. Real Shaving Company Face Scrub is less than $10 and works fine. I didn't by any means fall in love, but it's "do-able" and gets the job done and not completely terrible. So… we have a winner!

One of the main ingredients is kaolin, found in hundreds of skincare products and used for hundreds, even thousands, of years. It's been known to fight acne, increase circulation and, well, act as that clay that makes a great mask. One of the benefits is the natural minerals, aluminum oxide and silica (though suggested not to be used daily). Because it's drying, the sweet almond oil is nice to soften and condition the skin, in addition to the glyceryl stearate. There's also walnut shell powder for the actual exfoliation (those who are interested in the product should test it first, as I personally am sensitive to walnut shell powder). We also have cocoa seed butter, which is very nourishing. It actually helps prepare the skin for a shave afterward. The arguably good/bad tocopheryl acetate (essentially vitamin E acetate) weaseled its way into the product, and the lemongrass (cymbopogon) can't hurt. And I was surprised to find the black pepper seed oil, which has great analgesic properties and stimulates blood flow. WIth that said,  the only real gnarly ingredients were preservatives like phenoxyethanol and 2-Bromo-2-Ntropropane-1, 3-Diol and the fragrance.

When I used it, I wasn't a big fan of the scent (too rich) and the consistency was stickier than what I prefer. But it worked. And all in all, the ingredients aren't terrible. So if you're on a budget, this is not a bad product from the drugstore. Just don't buy it as a gift for a friend as the packaging is awful! Maybe that's the worst thing about it.

Aqua (Water), Kaolin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Propylene Glycol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Tocopheryl Acetate, Parfum (Fragrance), Cymbopogon, Schoenanthus Oil, Piper Nigrum (Black Pepper) Seed Extract, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol
