's recently launched Green Science
range has argan oil as its signature ingredient. I have been trying out the Firming Face Creme
($55) and found it to be environmentally and skin friendly. Aveda, it is claimed, is the first beauty company manufacturing entirely with wind power. The packaging is 50% post-consumer recycled and Forest Stewardship certified fiber, printed with soy ink. So much for its planet-friendly stripes, what about the skin? Face Firming Creme does exactly that; it firms and moisturizes.
There is argan leaf extract and argan oil in Face Firming Creme. Argan oil comes from a tree in Morocco, where it is a veritable multitasker that is used in cooking, medicine, animal feed and cosmetically. There is an interesting backstory in that the argan tree almost became extinct until UNESCO stepped in and helped finance the impoverished local people to save the trees and cultivate what is now becoming a lucrative export business. Argan oil is extremely high in linoleic acid, which is omega-6 and oleic, which is omega-9 fatty acid, and vitamin E.
Another rich source of oleic acid is astrocaryum murumuru (Brazilian palm tree). I also like the inclusion of spike moss, which according to a Taiwanese study may have some "anti-tumor activity". A Korean study claims that spike moss has biflavonoids that inhibit UV damage and increase the activity of growth proteins in human fibroblasts. Other interesting botanicals include: opuntia (cactus), which has some vitamin C; calophyllum tacamahaca (also known as tamanu oil), which is excellent at aiding the formation of skin tissue; and scutellaria baicalensis (skullcap), an antioxidant used in Chinese medicine to treat cancer.
More conventional anti-agers include acetyl heaxapeptide-8 (a peptide muscle relaxant), ceramide 3 (a lipid that helps protect the skin) and glucosamine HCI (an anti-inflammatory). Apart from a dollop of silicone there is nothing to dislike.
I've been using it on my neck and decollete with good results. However, Aveda Green Science Face Firming Creme doesn't give my skin quite the same glow as Kaeline's Argan Vitality Serum.
