Revlon

Reviewed by Sarah January 5, 2010 5 Comments
Revlon was founded in 1932 by brothers Charles and Joseph Revson, and chemist Charles Lachman.

Fun Facts:

The Revlon company began operations by producing a single type of nail polish, using a unique formula of pigments rather than dyes.

During World War II, Revlon was awarded with an Army-Navy E Award for excellence for the makeup and personal care products the company created for the army.

Lauren Hutton signed the first-ever exclusive cosmetics contract with Revlon's Ultima line in 1973.

Revlon uses actors, rather than models, in almost all of their current beauty campaigns.

Company News/Recent Launches:

Revlon's ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick is a one-step lip product that claims to last for up to 12 hours.

Supermodel Elle Macpherson signed on as a Revlon spokesperson in 2009.

Revlon introduced ColorStay Mineral Mousse, a whipped mineral foundation, in 2009.

Revlon's Double Twist Mascara comes with a unique brush that incorporates thickening bristles and separating combs.

Each year, Revlon hosts the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women, a 5K fundraiser that raises money for various women's cancer charities.

Key Ingredients:

Revlon's nail enamels contain no formaldehyde, DBP, or toluene.

Revlon's Smoothing Beyond Natural Primer contains pyrus malus (apple) extract, an antioxidant that tones and exfoliates the skin.

Revlon's Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup contains SPF 15.

TIA's Take:

Although Revlon has been a drugstore staple for generations, the company's ingredient list does not seem to have changed with the times. While the company's nail polish line does boast that it is free of formaldehyde, toulene, and DBP, many of Revlon's cosmetics still contain harsh chemicals and irritants, including titanium dioxide, a component in many of Revlon's foundations, which is considered "potentially carcinogenic to humans." Revlon's Age-Defying Spa Foundation does contain açai berry, a so-called "superfruit" with a number of antioxidant properties, but this ingredient is buried under a bundle of potentially-toxic silicones and aluminum. For many of the company's products, it is virtually impossible to find an ingredient list of any kind. However, despite what may seem like many flaws, the brand does have a loyal following, and Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick has even been reviewed and recommended by this site.
