Somewhat moisturizing

Unpleasant scent, no results

By Lisa

I received the Scandic's Ung Line Smoothing Serum ($85) on June 26 and used it for about five weeks. I have normal skin. I'm in my 40s. I was expecting the product to deliver line-reduction as stated in the name. I incorporated it into my daily routine by rubbing it onto my face after washing and moisturizing.

Unfortunately, aside from a slight amount of moisturizing, there appeared to be no benefits whatsoever to using this product, and certainly not any alteration to facial lines, wrinkles, tone, texture, pores, discolorations, or other flaws like the name suggests that it would provide.

It was a struggle to get the product out of the box because it has this strange upper flap thing with a hole in it that doesn't want to lift up and detach from the box and the bottle. The bottle itself is fairly attractive in shape, and a pretty shade of blue. The product dispenses from an eyedropper embedded in the cap, which does not pick up the product well, and provides an erratic and dribbly dispensing of product.

The product itself is a colorless serum, with a strong unpleasant smell that made me think of rotting food. The texture of the product is unpleasant, very greasy. The product is extremely slow to absorb into the skin, and has very poor absorption overall; most of the product stays on the skin surface, which makes the skin look greasy, and makes a mess out of any makeup that is applied on top of it. It is very heavy on the skin, and you can feel it sitting there all day. This is probably due to the fact that the third ingredient is glycerin, which is a heavy greasy product.

The first ingredient is water, which tells you that you're not getting a good concentration of ingredients. The next ingredient is witch hazel, which is an astringent, and drying to the skin. The fourth ingredient is alcohol, also drying to the skin; this is probably part of why there is so little moisturizing effect to this product.

It is impossible to tell from the box which of the ingredients are supposed to have some sort of beneficial effect on the skin. There is a list of plant ingredients such as chamomile, lavender, sandalwood, and rosehips; perhaps these are part of the unpleasant fragrance.

The other highest-list ingredients also don't seem to do anything. Polysorbate 20 is a surfactant, which breaks up surface tension in liquids. Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate is a synthetic version of something from snake venom that is supposed to smooth or relax the skin; I saw no evidence of this at all, and no valid scientific or medical site backs up these claims. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 is supposed to contribute to skin firmness, but again, I saw no evidence of this on my own skin after 5 weeks of usage. Either these chemicals simply don't do anything, or the concentrations in which they appear in this product are too low to accomplish anything even after five weeks of usage.

In summary, I found no benefit to the use of this product, no improvement at all to my skin, and the product is unpleasant to use. I will not be purchasing this product, and I do not recommend this product to anyone.

Editor's note: Scandic asked us to mention that this product was not used as directed and this may have impacted its efficacy. A serum would typically be used before moisturising, not after. The moisturizer used was not one of Scandic's. We'll be conducting another test of Ung with a second reviewer and see if results differ.

Marta, I did try the Ren Pre-Serum that I got to test from you but since then I loved it so much I also started using the Ung Serum and the Klar Cleanser from Scändic - and they're both fantastic as well. Right now my skincare regime is so simple but unbelievably effective - I'm using Ren, Ung & Klar all from Scändic! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to try Ren or I might not ever have discovered what a truly incredible line of products Scändic offers! The comments I made on this post were 100% related to my experience with the Ung serum.

Thanks for chiming in Hollie, but I wonder if you are mixed up as the product you reviewed for us was the pre-serum (not Ung). I have just started testing Ung myself and agree with you Hollie that the scent is light and fresh, the box is perfectly fine and the product pleasant to use. There are several worthwhile peptides. I'll reserve any future judgement until I have tested Ung for a few weeks.

After reading your review, it's hard to believe we tried the same product because my experience couldn't have been more different. I've been using Ung Serum for 6 weeks now & I honestly couldn't be more pleased or more impressed with the results. Not only have I noticed a major decrease in fine lines & wrinkles over the time I've been using it, the immediate results were phenomenal to me. I absolutely love how it mimics a Botox® effect so my skin was instantly tighter & firmer. I applied my serum to a freshly cleansed face twice a day so I'm wondering if that because you moisturizer Before using Ung instead of After like was directed, that it didn't allow the serum to absorb properly. Seems to me like your moisturizer would have created a barrier so the serum wouldn't be able to penetrate the skin cells as intended. I also didn't think the serum smelled too strong or bad in anyway. To me it had a light, clean scent. The Ung absorbed very quickly & effectively for me and I have oily skin so I was pleasantly surprised that it left no greasy feeling on my face. As for the box, I did not have any issues removing the serum from the box & really appreciated that it was secured tightly to prevent any damage during shipping. Like I said, my experience was amazing & I will continue to use Ung. My skin had never looked better!
