Improves skin's texture and health over time

Reviewed by Heather

Before I give you my review, I want to tell you why I was so excited to get the chance to try a certified-organic beauty product. I recently decided to switch to organic products after reading the book Toxic Beauty by Dr. Samuel Epstein and researching the EWG’s Skin Deep beauty database, which rates products based on the safety of their ingredients. (If you haven’t heard of either of these, I highly recommend checking them out.) After reading about all of the health risks associated with many personal care products on the market, I tried a lot of organic beauty products. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with most of what I tried. Not only did I not enjoy using them due to things like a weird texture or strange fragrance, they didn’t even seem to work well (like one shampoo that refused to lather!). Since these products were also much pricier than most of the non-organic brands I had been using, I felt like I had wasted money and was very discouraged. It seemed like I had to choose between products that worked and were unsafe and products that were safe yet didn’t work. Neither of these choices was acceptable to me. I had high hopes that the Sevani Hyaluronic Wrinkle Defense ($64 in the TIA shop) serum might actually be the exception. I’m happy to say that it was!

Key ingredients

First of all, the ingredients are totally organic and SAFE, and they are really effective anti-agers. (Hyaluronic acid is one of the best anti-aging ingredients out there, so that sold me right away.) Here’s the list of the key ingredients and their benefits from the Sevani product website:

* Niacinimide (B3): improves aged and photo-damaged skin, reducing redness, lines and age spots

* Hyaluronic Acid: one of nature’s best anti-aging weapons boosts elasticity and hydration

* DMAE: stimulates acetylcholine for a firmer facial tone and less sagging

* MSM: feeds the formation of collagen and elastin, preventing wrinkles, age spots and redness

* Panthenol (B5): anti-inflammatory, soothes, protects

* Resveratrol: High powered antioxidant protects from free radical damage

* Acai, gooseberry (amalaki), pomegranate, sea buckthorn and goji berry: high vitamin C content improves skin elasticity and radiance while preventing accelerated aging

As you can see by the list, this product contains great stuff. The first time I tried it, I was worried it would smell weird, but it actually has no noticeable fragrance at all. Because it’s a serum, just a few drops go a long way. My skin tends to be sensitive but it did not sting or irritate my face at all. You can easily cover your whole face and neck with about three to four drops instead using a whole dropper full. It feels like watery gel, spreads easily, and absorbs quickly and completely. I have tried other serums that irritated my skin or made me feel like I have either an oil slick or a film of silicone on my face. This one felt great. It made my face feel firmer and toned without the usual tightness or dryness. The serum is very hydrating. Some people, depending on their skin type and climate, might be able to get by with less moisturizer if they use this under it. I also found that the serum seemed to made my other products work better. (I used this before anything else in the morning and put it on at night before my night cream.) I also put some on the backs of my hands because I thought this would make it easier for me to see any improvements.

What about the results?

Well, I didn’t tell my husband I was going to try this (beauty products are not exactly things we discuss!), but two days after I started using it, we were talking and he literally stopped mid-sentence and said, “Hey, your skin looks really good. Are you doing anything different?” Well, I was shocked! My husband just doesn’t say things like this or even notice that kind of thing. That must mean something, right? Now, I can only tell you what he said, and I don’t know how credible his opinion is in this case. I don’t have any “before and after” photos to prove that it made a difference. I also can’t say “It reduced my crow’s-feet by 12% in the first week” or something like that. But what I can say is that my husband noticed enough of an improvement to make a comment. I noticed it too. My skin felt better, looked firmer, had better overall tone, and was much more hydrated. And I could really see a big difference on my hands, which are usually so dry that no amount of lotion I put on seems to help. I also did not get any of the flakiness or itching on my face that I get from products from time to time. So my skin certainly looks younger and healthier. (By the way, I am 45 and want to reduce the appearance of fine lines I see now as well as prevent further wrinkles from forming as much as possible.)

Would this product work for you?

Well, let me first say that I do feel it’s important to use products that are free of chemicals, and I believe this product fits the bill. Here are some facts I’ve learned over the last couple of years: our skin is the largest organ in our body and acts more like a “carrier” then a “barrier,” despite what many of us may have been taught. Consider this: if ingredients could not absorb into our skin and enter our bloodstream, then transdermal medication patches (like NicoDerm CQ, etc.) wouldn’t work, right? And we know that they do. So it does matter what you put on - and therefore in your body! As for anti-aging products, some target the appearance of wrinkles and not the cause. I would view this serum more like food or vitamins for your skin that actually make it healthier, not just look better.

Will it give you quick dramatic results like Botox or some other expensive creams with “state of the art ingredients/technology” (aka chemicals)? Maybe, but probably not. I think this product is one that with daily use, you will not only continue to see improvements over time, but your skin will actually be healthier, not just look better due to a temporary fix.

At $65 for a relatively small bottle, the Wrinkle Defense may seem too expensive, but it’s the cost per use that matters. It takes just a few drops twice a day. I have used it for over two months and still have half the bottle left, so it should last you several months. But let’s face it, chemicals are cheap in comparison to organic ingredients. But for me, as far as this product is concerned anyway, it’s worth the extra cost. I just can’t do “cheap and toxic” anymore (let alone expensive and toxic!), and I’m so glad I found a safe product that actually works.

I also have to mention the compliance issue. If a product takes a lot of time to apply, doesn’t smell nice, is messy to use, or forces you to wait a few minutes for it to dry, absorb, etc., chances are I won’t stick with it. After the novelty fades, I am just too lazy to bother with it. The Wrinkle Defense is so easy to use and just takes seconds to apply and absorb that I used it every single day and night - no skipping or being lazy. The best product on earth does you no good if you don’t use it daily, so that’s one more plus for this one. I definitely plan on buying more of the serum when my bottle is empty, and I would LOVE to try out more products from the Sevani brand.

Bottom line? I can see nothing but pros for trying this product. While you may not see a dramatic difference right away or be able to pinpoint exactly what has improved, over time and with continued use your skin should feel healthier and look better. Best of all, you won’t be putting toxic ingredients on it. Instead, you’ll be giving your skin what it needs to address the causes of dryness and wrinkles. That, in my humble and non-expert opinion, is what every good anti-aging product should do and I highly recommend this one. Check out the Sevani website to read more about this company.

Any product containing high-quality prickly pear (also goes under the name indian fig / barbary fig) is a product I want to try. Prickly pear has 150 % more vitamin E than argan oil and is a true miracle worker--it targets hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, skin disorders and inflammation[eczema, psoriaris], but particularly due to its high Omega and Vitamin E concentrations is perhaps the best facial oil at preventing future damage and giving an out-of-this-world glow to the skin.

While the rest of the ingredients are undoubtedly nice (msm, hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, niacinimide, amla / acai / goji / pomegranate), there are other good brands incorporating these with less result; I am positive it's the barbary fig that makes this a standout product.

Also, to put the price in perspective here: a regular 1 oz bottle of unrefined, cold-pressed barbary fig costs around 90-100$. Other high-end products that include barbary fig oil, like Yuli Liquid Courage, Mun Aknari, and La Bella Figura Modern Radiance Concentrate all operate in the 95-155 $ price range. I think you get a lot for the price with this product: the formula blend is good, the ingredients are strong and the prickly pear tops it all off.

I am in love with Sevani products, and want to try this one too! Never thought about refrigeration so I emailed and they said no, that they use the radish root preservative and that their blend of other natural ingredients also help preserve, so I am adding this one to my list of must haves. The rose toner, c serum and rapid renewal have transformed my skin like no other products, not too mention no harmful stuff. Can't wait to try this and others.

Hi Michele, I don't think it will benefit from, or need, refrigeration.

Did you put a moisturizer on over the Sevani?

P.S. I'm rather annoyed with this section at the moment, as I finished writing a more in-depth comment, got the CAPTCHA wrong, and all the words were gone. Grrr...
