Developed in New York City in 2001, Shielo touts high quality, naturally based, organic botanical infused hair products. They specialize in sustainable methods to produce professional results in volumizing, strengthening, protecting color, and detangling while fortifying hair. Though their packaging is emblazoned with bold Japanese writing, it seems Shielo opportunistically appropriates these characters only as vague symbols of their apparent connection to the all-natural beauty practices of traditional Japan, because their products are made, manufactured and marketed in the United States.

The Good

Marta found that the Color Protect Reflecting Conditioner left her hair voluminous and somehow sleek, and the Antioxidant Leave In Protectant made her hair soft and manageable with a gentle sheen. The products for the most part are made up of natural ingredients and botanicals including ginkgo biloba, analcyclys pyrethrum, quillaja japonica bark extract, a grease removing botanical, biotin, antioxidants white tea, apple, soy, cysteine and yeast derived hexapeptide-11. Helping detangle the natural way are horsetail and mallow, both sources of silica.

The Bad

Shielo doesn’t get its results without a little chemical help. Products feature silicone, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, and suspected photocarcinogen benzophenone-3.

The Truth

In addition to Shielo’s rather exploitative use of Japanese characters on their packaging, their logo proudly and ambiguously lists three locations in lower case: New York, Tokyo, Sao Paolo. Upon doing a little research on the company website, it seems there’s nothing to these locations other than a tenuous marketing thread designed to illicit a sense of tropical exoticism, and Japanese herbal wisdom in potential consumers. Still a newish company, it seems this is a ploy to garner a sense of legitimacy, but it just seems a little slimy.

But that’s about all that’s slimy about Shielo products, because as Marta has attested, they leave hair soft, voluminous, frizz-free, and shiny. Though Shielo enhances its products with a few select chemicals, Marta felt that the results greatly outweighed the risks, though their inclusion might be enough to detract purists.
