Finding a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that actually moisturize and fortify dry over-processed hair can be like finding a needle in a haystack. For the past year I have been using Pureology Antifade Complex Nanoworks Shampoo and Wen Fig Cleansing Conditioner with satisfying results. Then, Truth in Aging gave me the opportunity to compare and review Shielo versus my Pureology and Wen products.
The Shielo Hydrate Moisturizing Shampoo ($23 in the TIA shop) and Vibrancy Conditioner ($23 in the TIA shop) contain UV protectants from white tea to enhance color protection, shea butter to maintain a protective moisture barrier by sealing the hair shaft, and hibiscus and vanilla cactus to help soothe the scalp, which most of us know can become dry and irritated after color treatments.
While I found this product to meet its claims, I did find a few questionable ingredients in the Shielo line including hexylene glycol and cyclopentasiloxane. Hexylene glycol is an aliphatic diol that functions as a solvent and viscosity agent in cosmetics and personal care products. Among the glycols, hexylene glycol is known to produce severe ocular irritation. While using this product, I did not notice any severe occular irritation, but that may be due to the short amount of time (i.e. three weeks) I have been using this product. Cyclopentasiloxane, as I’ve discovered via Truth In Aging, may have harmful effects on the environment (i.e. marine life). Cyclopentasiloxane may also cause mild skin and eye irritation. Again, I did not notice any noticeable irritations.
Comparing the Shielo shampoo with my Pureology shampoo, I have found that the products are very comparable in terms of their results as well as their ingredient content. I would recommend alternating between using the Wen cleansing conditioner and the Shielo shampoo and conditioner. The Wen line sticks to using basic natural ingredients with a few minor exceptions such as methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, which are common preservatives.
I took a specific liking to the Shielo Vibrancy Conditioner. I myself having color treated hair have noticed a difference in the overall texture of my mane. It does indeed “hydrate the hair with a blast of moisture.” It deeply hydrates with peptides that not only have strengthened my slightly damaged hair, but have also extended my color treatments. Overall, I would recommend the Shielo line for those of all hair types who have hair damage from chemical processing and heat styling. If you are looking for restorative properties, then this is that needle in the haystack.
