I occasionally ask my 40-something year old friends with particularly healthy, glowing skin the key to their success.  Invariably, their routine includes some form of exfoliation -- peels, scrubs,  or microdermabrasion.  I was intrigued, then, when I returned home one day to find a sample of Shielo Smoothing Complexion Scrub in my mailbox.  I’m not usually interested in a scrub-type product, preferring instead to use my Clarisonic and favorite Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive ($39) to exfoliate. In the past, I have found scrubs to be too abrasive for my sensitive skin and the long list of unfamiliar chemicals included in this scrub usually means irritation.

According to the Shielo packaging, the key ingredients of the scrub are Aloe Vera juice for its “refreshing vitamins”; Jojoba microspheres for revitalization; and Allantoin for inflammation.  The scrub is a non-foaming cream with a pleasant, clean scent and somewhat abrasive jojoba beads for exfoliation.   I reviewed the list of ingredients and noted items like polyethylene (the second ingredient) and cetyl alcohol that could be possible irritants.

I started out using the scrub once a week in the shower, ultimately increasing my use to twice a week. I was pleasantly surprised to find my skin felt really smooth and soft after applying the scrub with my Clarisonic.  In spite of the fact that my skin is rather sensitive, I had no new flare ups and my cheeks glowed after using it.  The jojoba beads felt sharp and somewhat irritating on my forehead, but my cheeks, neck and décolleté looked nicely refreshed.  I can’t say that I noticed any anti-aging benefits with this product, but the aloe, panthenol and allantoin may have helped with soothing my sensitive skin.  All-in-all, I would say this scrub did a nice job on my neck and décolleté, but I prefer something a little gentler for my face.
