An all-natural product with diatomaceous earth that exfoliates and softens

Skin feels moisturized after rinsing product off

Product tingles and tightens skin when drying

by Christine

I was selected to review Skin Nutrition LIVE Renewal Smoothie ($45.95). I’m a 43-year-old with combination skin. The spots that are oily are super oily, and the spots that are dry peel like crazy. I’ve become a big fan of exfoliation due to the peeling, so this product seemed like it would be right up my alley. I’ve used it once or twice a week now for about six weeks (I asked for extra time because I was only using it one to two times a week), and while I can’t say I’ve seen any improvement, I can definitely say it hasn’t made anything worse.

I was very excited to try this product — I love that it is all natural. I’m fascinated by the fact that one of its ingredients is diatomaceous earth. Previously, I’d only heard of diatomaceous earth in connection with pool filters and as an alternative to chemical insecticides. Knowing what little I did about it, I figured it would be a pretty good exfoliate.

I opened the package, shook the bottle well, then pumped some out into my hand. The first few times I used it, I thought it smelled like dirt, but later on, it smelled almost fruity. The directions say to cover your face with it, then wait 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing. As it dries, it tingles, which I didn't mind, but it also seems to shrink, which gives an unpleasant, tight feeling. After your 20 to 30 (30 for me) minutes are up, you add water, rub it around on your face, then rinse. I do like the way my skin feels after I rinse the product off. It’s very soft, smooth and feels rather moisturized.

I did have a problem with the pump about halfway through my trial — it just stopped working. I opened the bottle, rinsed the pump really well in hot water and dried it out. It still wouldn’t work that night, but the next time I used the product, the pump was working again. I think maybe the product is a bit too thick for the pump.

I’ve had a cold for the last week, and my nose has been so red I could win an audition for a role as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. It’s also been peeling and raw. I used the product last night, and it did a great job of not only soothing my tender nose but exfoliating away all that nasty peeling skin.

I will continue to use this bottle, but I don’t know if I would buy another. It’s a good product —  I’m just not sure it’s the right product for me.
