SkinActives Brow and Lash Serum- reader reviewed

December 4, 2012 Reviewed by Naheed 0 Comments

I have spare brows and, for some reason, my eyelashes keep growing and shedding on the ends. I’ve tried a few Brow and Lash products based on good reviews in vain. When I was given the opportunity to try SkinActives Brow and Lash Serum, I was happy to see all the good reviews about this product on their website.

According to the description of the product on the website, this hair strengthening serum contains actives known to help promote hair growth, both in men and women. It’s designed to help with poor micro-circulation, follicle atrophy caused by dihydrotestosterone, and follicle aging. Full nutrition is provided to compensate for loss of nutrients brought about by poor blood irrigation.

First of all, this product comes in a tube, a beige color gel. An eyebrow product in a tube... how do you put it on, you wonder! To answer this question, Hannah from SkinActives advises to choose any method that works for you, as long as you apply the serum to the skin at the eyelash line, where eyelashes are formed.  Use a Q-tip, or your finger, or any tool, as long as it is clean. What worked for me was an eyebrow color applying stick. It’s like a toothpick with one end that is slanted. I squeezed out a little serum on that and put on my eyebrows and base of lashes. It worked fine for me. At night, I would just apply directly from the tube on my eyebrows but for lashes I used either that tool or Q-tip.

Now let’s talk about the ingredients:

KGF: KGF is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family and was found to stimulate hair growth.

Sea kelp bioferment: complete nutrient supply, moisturizer.

Carnitine: antiage

Grape seed proanthocyanidins: antioxidant, promotes hair growth.

Niacinamide: anti-age, anti-itch.

Soy isoflavones: antiage.

Saw palmetto: Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) sterols have been shown to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity, the enzyme responsible for conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone and to inhibit binding of dihydrotestosterone to the cytosolic androgen receptor. Chrysin: promotes hair growth.

There are other ingredients as well that are listed at the bottom. This list looked pretty impressive to me as far as hair growth was concerned, although I don’t feel comfortable about the use of Methylparaben, Propylparaben. I was really excited about the growth factor (KGF).

I started using this serum day and night about six weeks ago. It does have a little brownish/beige color that shows if you put it outside your eyebrows, but since I fill in my eyebrows with brow powder that was not a problem for me. It does stings a little if it gets into your eyes. I usually have a slow growth on my eyebrows and gets threading done after more than two months and I was hoping that while using this product I might have to go early. Sorry to say, but this product didn’t help with my eyebrows or lashes growth at all. It's been two months that I went for my eyebrow threading. My eyelashes are also the same length. Actually, I took a before picture this time and my eyebrows still look the same.

I used this product for more than a month before submitting my review, because I read on Skinactives website that a couple of reviewers saw some growth after few months and I thought maybe I could be one of those people. May be in my case the cells in charge of growth died out for some reason, like Hannah said. She also suggested taking a break from mascara since the wax in mascara might interfere with the serum penetration.

In my opinion, it will work better for someone who had over plucked their eyebrows because the growth cells will still be active or alive.

At a price of less than $10, I would still say to give it a try.

I have 1/3 tube left and will keep using it. If I see any change, I might update my review.
