An affordable vitamin C serum that works very well to even out skin tone

Is easily tolerated by sensitive skin

Contains a preservative

Skinfinite doesn’t mess around when it comes to formulating. Its anti-aging products feature peptides, retinol, plant stem cells and growth factors – the hard stuff. And now, Skinfinite has rounded out the line with a high impact vitamin C serum, the Skinfinite Advanced C20+ ($65).

I approach high concentrations of vitamin C with a certain amount of trepidation on account of my sensitive skin, so while I was thrilled to see that Skinfinite has majored on a 20% dose of ascorbic acid, I was a little worried about whether I would take to it. I needn’t have. Skinfinite suggests using Advanced C20+ once or twice a week, and I was easily able to tolerate it at twice weekly, even sneaking in an extra application on my neck and décolleté.

After six weeks, I can say that Skinfinite Advanced C20+ very much augments my regimen to even out skin tone and help fade a few freckles. In fact, just this week, a makeup artist commented that my skin was unusually even for someone of my age (54).

There are pluses all around for the formula overall. However, I would give a minus to C20+ for the consistency. It is very thin and I have found that the best way to apply it is to squirt a small amount into a cupped palm, dip my finger in the liquid and then dab my face and neck (trying to pump directly to my finger tips as I would with most serums results in a messy misfire).

Anyway, back to all those pluses. Most notable is ferulic acid. The combination of ferulic acid and vitamin C is a very good idea because ferulic acid has been found to act synergistically with other antioxidants and, specifically, renders vitamins C and E more powerful. A Duke University study found it particularly good for preventing sun damage, and studies elsewhere have demonstrated that exposure to ultraviolet light actually increases the antioxidant power of ferulic acid. Skinfinite has lined it up not only with vitamin C, but also vitamin E – not unlike the more expensive (twice the price in fact) offering from Skinceuticals.

Regular readers won’t be surprised to see me pounce on astaxanthin. This is a great addition as it is a super powerful antioxidant. According to the results of a 2002 study on hairless mice, researchers concluded that astaxanthin “can significantly prevent UV-induced collagen degradation, wrinkles, lipid peroxidation, sunburn, phototoxicity and photoallergy.”

Although the ingredients list looks short and sweet, there are many other good things. Phloretin, which is found in the flesh and skin of apples, is an antioxidant that is particularly good at getting through the skin barrier. Lutein is interesting since it filters the high-energy, blue wavelengths of light from the visible-light spectrum by as much as 90%. And there’s that great antioxidant workhorse, alpha lipoic acid.

The only thing not to like is the preservative phenoxyethanol. Overall though, Skinfinite has come up with an A+ vitamin C product at a very decent price.
