Snow, for winter weather enthusiasts, is a happy sign of the season, but for those of us who don't have our sleigh handy, it can make everyday tasks, including a trip to the drugstore, nearly impossible. If you're unable to make it out of the house over the holidays, here are a few fast fixes that you can concoct from the comfort of your own home.

Drugstore buy: Chapstick

At-home solution: Honey-olive lip balm

This ingredient list for this tasty formula may sound more like a Mediterranean treat than a fix for scaly skin, but this potion packs serious emollient power.

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon canola oil, 2 teaspoons honey, 1 teaspoon orange oil or extract (optional), 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon oil or extract (optional)

Stir ingredients together in a bowl until well mixed. Apply to lips as needed.

Drugstore buy: Acne mask

At-home solution: Mint and Wine Facial Mask

When you're almost at the bottom of that bottle of Chardonnay, save a few spoonfuls to use in this blemish-busting mask.

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons dry white wine, 1 teaspoon lime juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon mint leaves, 1/2 unpeeled cucumber, 3 tablespoons chopped watercress

Combine ingredients in a food processor on medium speed until smooth. Apply evenly to face. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse using warm water.

Drugstore buy: Dandruff shampoo

At-home solution: Apple dandruff treatment and rinse

Extreme temperatures can cause our skin to flake off, and the skin on your scalp is no exception. Use this dandruff treatment in place of your regular flake-fighting products.

Treatment Ingredients: 1 cup fresh apple juice

Rinse: 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1 cup water

Apply apple juice to hair from roots to tips. Stir together vinegar and water and apply to hair. Rinse with warm water.

Drugstore buy: Pore strips

At-home solution: Gelatin pore peel

There's a sick satisfaction in seeing gunk and grime come out in little quill-like spikes on a pore strip, but you don't need a drugstore nearby to get the same pore-purging results.

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin, 1 1/2 tablespoons milk, 2 drops tea tree oil

Combine ingredients and microwave for 10 seconds. Apply to congested areas, avoiding eyes. Wait until mixture is firm (15-20 minutes) and peel off.

Drugstore buy: Body scrub

At-home solution: Tropical exfoliator

This easy-to-make exfoliating treatment sloughs away dead skin cells and leaves you smelling sweet.

Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons orange juice, 1/4 cup pureed mango, 1 cup olive oil

Mix ingredients together in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Apply to body using circular motion, avoiding face. Rinse with warm water.
