Solutions for dry winter legs

Is a Solution for:
Dry Skin
January 21, 2010 Reviewed by Marta 5 Comments
Winter - with its combination of dry indoor heating and dry outdoor winds - can can be especially rough on legs. Some days the skin on my shins can flake as much as if they were peeling from sunburn.

The Clarisonic Brush ($175) is invaluable and works especially well on scaly legs if used on dry skin before hopping into the shower for an additional rub down with your exfoliator of choice. I recently started using Nutra-Lift One Step Body  Scrub ($18), which is more of a shower gel that scrubs (with walnut shells). Nutra-Lift claims that delivers up to 100 times more moisture than your average shower gel. It exfoliates with walnut shells and there are 14 antioxidants in addition to seaweed extract making it good enough to really spend time massaging in. For more of a typical exfoliant, I still love the Malie Body Polish ($42 and one of our Five Best body scrubs) from the Hawaiian spa that grows its own organic ingredients. In summer, this provides so much hydration that a moisturizer isn't even needed.

That can't be said for winter though and I find myself using This Works Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil ($60)as well as a moisturizer. You gotta love the cheeky self-confidence of the name and if you use this a few times a week, flaky and thirsty skin will be a thing of the past. I’ve discovered that the trick is to use a small amount as too much doesn’t absorb. One of the main ingredients is macadamia oil. Macadamians are amazingly nutritional and 22% of the oil is omega 7, a fatty acid. You’ll be even more impressed by peach kernal oil, which is 44% fatty acids and relieves irritations and itching. Dry Leg Oil lasts forever.

For moisturizers, I am still really liking Nutra Lift's White Chocolate Body Butter ($24 at the TIA store), which is rich, has a fabulous chocolaty smell and is packed with antiaging ingredients. You'll also find that Bubalina's Pumpkin Body Butter will do a body good. Pumpkin, which is here in oil, extract and enzyme form, is full of beta-carotene, one of the plant carotenoids that is converted to vitamin A in the body. Pumpkin is also a good source of thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C, vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), riboflavin, potassium, copper and manganese.

And if you shave your legs, as I do, keeping them silky smooth and hydrated can be even more challenging. I have, after much trial and error, I have finally found a shaving cream that gives a close crop and isn't at all drying. In fact, Aubrey Organics Orange Cream Shave Cream ($5.49), is so full of natural emollients that moisturizer is barely required afterwards.

    Thanks--so helpful.
I really want to try the Nutra-Lift scrub, having been so pleased with TIA's recommendations on their hair products.
I've had really dry skin since I was a little girl and so have tried about everything on legs and body. One point you didn't mention--which is obvious but bears repeating--is to use a humidifier. I always have one running in my bedroom from from about November to March! It makes a huge difference, and not just for skin.
I use really heavy-duty body creams, by the tubful. My standby, which is a drugstore product and may well not merit the TIA seal of approval, is Moisturel. And I follow up on feet and hands with Kiehl's "Intensive Treatment and Moisturizer for Dry or Calloused Areas" which features a variety of oils.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

Kim, we don't carry Clarisonic. I know that it was on my wish list. I'll go back to OpenSky's nice sourcing people and see what we can do.
