Springing into makeup colors

Reviewed by Shyema March 9, 2010 0 Comments
The weather in NYC lately has got me in a fabulous mood, reminding me that Spring is imminent. Paired with the recent Indian celebration Holi, or the “festival of colors” (where in a playful tradition people throw colored powder and water at each other to signify taking all the sorrow away and making life a little brighter), I’ve been inspired to pay homage to both by doing a short round up on just how you can add a little color to your life:

EYES – Physician’s Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Eye Shadow Duo

Marta loved the idea organic mascara from the same Physician’s Formula line for not only being free of parabens and synthetics, but laying claim to a clump-free formula. Now you can pair it with their Organic Wear 100% origin eye shadow duo ($7.95) which follows the same ingredient philosophy. It’s formulated to be gentle enough for sensitive skin too. It contains soothing kaolin and jojoba seed oil as well as light reflecting mica. I also love that it suggests colors based on your eye color for the natural looking touch up. It says it’s (only) 15.9% organic, and may contain traces of titanium dioxide which we know can increase aging effects – however, it is under the “may contain” part of the ingredients which leaves me less worried about it being a heavy duty part of the whole list.

CHEEKS – Dr. Hauschka Rouge Powder

Dr. Hauschka, a holistic skin care company focused on alcohol- and preservative-free plant-based remedies, offer a their Rouge Powder ($29.95) in two pretty sun-kissed colors. It has a kaolin clay base with rose extract and pure silk. In our post on the Teava mask we told you how kaolin’s unique mineral content (46% silicon oxide, 37% aluminum oxide) rejuvenates without sapping the skin’s natural oils, and is shown to heal blemishes and bring about a healthy glow – not a bad ingredient to base a cheek color. We’re not crazy about it containing talc, an ingredient which has been petitioned by cancer organizations to be limited in products based on a suspicious link with ovarian cancer. And Marta hasn’t been a huge fan of their “rhythmic” philosophies on skincare, but I thought that since their color offerings are not substantial they may be limiting their color additives. As another plus, their rouge powder also contains natural-occurring diatomaceous earth and jojoba, both known to remove face of impurities.

LIPS – Cargo PlantLove Botanical Lipstick

I adore the whole PlantLove Botanical Lipstick ($20) approach since it came out — natural-based lipstick with a recyclable tube. So green-friendly! Marta has also raved about its evening primrose, rich in (omega-6) fatty acids, and cacao (cocoa) seeds which have been shown by researchers to improve circulation and diminish wrinkles. I also love the complimenting colors from pinks (like “Sarah”) to deep berries (like “Cece”).

NAILS – Priti Polish

And finally, non-toxic nail polish line Priti ($12.50) offers a rainbow of glossy colors with a soy-based formula free from toluene, dbp and fomaldehyde. We also reviewed their Dazzle Dry which was not only long-wearing, it kept Marta’s nails from stripping and flaking. It comes in over 130 shades so you can pick which color will get you in the spring ready mood too. Me? I think I’m feelin’ their magenta “Bovey Belle Carnation.”
