August is one of the top months for families to plan a move. School’s out, the weather’s great, and summer Fridays are well underway, so relocating at this time makes perfect sense. And while you’re in the midst of sorting through your closets, attic, basement, etc., you’re likely to uncover things you haven’t used (let alone seen) in ages. This opens the door to hold a yard sale or to make a generous donation to your favorite charity. The same cleanup goes for your beauty drawer or bathroom cabinet. Toss the old, then in with the new! Start by stocking up on these beauty essentials.

A good facial cleanser
The importance of a facial cleansing routine couldn’t be stressed enough. Properly removing dirt, excess sebum, and makeup keeps your pores clear and preps the skin for your anti-aging serums and creams. Of course the key is to find a cleanser that does the job well yet doesn’t contain harsh ingredients that leave you with dry, uncomfortably tight skin. One of Marta’s newest discoveries is LiftLab’s Purify & Clarify Daily Cleanser & Detox Mask ($65), which gently and effectively exfoliates with an unusual marine active – roe extract. And one of my favorite finds is the Sevani Ageless Radiance Refining AHA Cleanser ($39 in the shop), a cream cleanser that has a delicious citrus scent, exfoliating fruit acids, and willow bark extract to calm blemish-prone skin.

A toner, as needed, for your skin type
Toners are not for everyone. Astringents, in particular, contain 20 to 60 percent alcohol, which work best for nonpurists and oily skin types. One important task of a good toner is to restore the skin’s natural pH balance, which can get thrown out of whack during your cleansing routine. I use the Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic ($24) whenever I feel my skin needs a little extra hydration post face wash. It’s also an excellent way to cool off during the dog days of summer. (I was supremely grateful to have the spray bottle with me during a heat wave in New York City on a Fourth of July outing this year.) Another refreshing toner to consider is one of Marta’s picks with hyaluronic acid and soothing chamomile: 100% Pure Jasmine Green Tea Tonique ($19).

An anti-aging serum
Confession: I had never used a serum before I joined the TIA team earlier this year. Now that I’ve learned what I’ve been missing (serums are more highly concentrated than your average moisturizer, and their actives penetrate deeper into the skin), I’m eager to reap the benefits. Right now, I have my eye on Mukti’s Antioxidant Facial Serum. Serum newbies can also try the skin smoother Osmosis Replenish Antioxidant Repair Serum ($44). For a more powerful wrinkle-fighting product, I’d be remiss without mentioning the TIA community’s new favorite, AQ Skin Solutions Active Serum ($149 in the shop) with human conditioned media.

A multitasking moisturizer
Oh, how I love beauty products that do double duty. And I practically expect this from a daytime moisturizer. That’s why my current go-to is Avitalin’s Luminizer Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 25 ($55). The natural formula offers light coverage, just the right amount of hydration for warm weather, and, of course, sun protection. La Vie Celeste has a great multitasker in its Day & Night Restorative Face Cream with R-Lipoic Acid ($65 in the shop), which Emily says works flawlessly under makeup and after a couple of weeks of morning-and-night use was very happy with how “smooth, healthy, and well-hydrated” her face seemed.

A dependable eye cream
Many people who visit TIA are on the hunt for the perfect eye cream – to treat a variety of issues, from dark circle and crow’s feet to unattractive bags. And when you find that winning product, it’s a real achievement! I was spurred by the popularity of Your Best Face Correct ($150 in the shop) – I thought I must see what all the hype is about. Mere days after applying the product (now reformulated) nightly, I noticed that some puffiness I started to notice on my left lower lid had gone down significantly. Score! Likewise, Mark was won over by Skinfinite LOL Eye Serum ($49 in the shop) – he experienced reduced puffiness and visible firming around the eye area.

Hi Elena, I find Osmosis Replenish a little drying too and always layer something over it (such as Skin Nutrition Cell CPR). Specifically, regarding alcohol denat, you can read this entry from our ingredients directory: and there is more in this article

Although I haven't heard about the vitamin A issue that you mention, it is true that ethyl alcohols can be drying and cause irritation. We have been sent some products from a German brand that has alcohol relatively high up the ingredients list (Germans can't seem to formulate without it) and I know that this will put many people off. It is worth balancing the good with the bad and note that alcohol helps other ingredients penetrate and, in the case of a formula like Replenish, that can be a very good thing.

I have a question regarding osmosis replenish which i used to use but had to stop because it was too drying. Alcohol denat, is very high up on the list, and since the product doesn't have the usual preservatives, it implies they are using it as a preservative, which means concentrations can be up to 20%. I read that Ethyl alcohols cause irritation, can develop Rosacea and prevent the absorption of Vitamin A, leading to premature aging. Your take??
