When it comes to my sensitive, easily provoked skin, I’ve come to realize (through much trial and error) that less is more. This is no exception when it comes to taking proper care of my pucker, as I learned after trying the S.W. Basics Organic Lip Balm Flight ($15), a kit that offers four tempting scents in an adorable metal tin.
I just turned 26, and for the past few years, I’ve suffered from perpetually chapped and peeling lips. I figured my lips were just prone to dryness. Little did I know, the unsightly peeling was actually my lips crying out for mercy. Before my days at Truth In Aging, I didn’t give much thought to all the irritants lurking in my skin care products. Now, I realize that even if my lips were inclined to being dry, I wasn’t doing them any favors by using chemical-heavy products from the drugstore that promised to sooth but ended up doing the opposite.
After trying to become a little more aware of what products I use, I swapped out my rotation of generic drugstore junk for Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm ($3.30). As far as I knew at the time, it sounded more natural and nourishing than what I had been using before. And since my lips still continued to peel and flake, I took this as further evidence that it was an issue beyond my control. I would compensate by applying even more lip balm. I had pretty much resigned myself to a life of chapped lips.
Then, I came across the S.W. Basics Organic Lip Balm and decided to give the cocoa one a try first. This lip balm is comprised of four ingredients, and they’re all organic and all sound like things you’d find in your kitchen cabinet. Upon the first application, there was no denying that it felt better on my lips than the hard, waxy stuff I was accustomed to. It feels like cool silk gliding across them and leaves no sticky residue behind — just a subtle cocoa smell that I can’t get enough of. The rest of the scents — cinnamon, peppermint and citrus — are pleasant as well, though some are a little more potent than others. That being said, this may not be ideal for someone with a sensitivity to scents. But the cocoa one is absolutely my favorite. And I found myself needing to apply it less frequently than I did with other lip products — even better!
After about a week, I caught sight of my lips in the bathroom mirror, and I couldn’t look away. This is no exaggeration. For once, they actually looked smooth, full and healthy. I never thought I could feel so much affection for a lip balm, but I do, and now I don’t go anywhere without this one.
