Sweetsation Therapy created the Lumi*Essence Body Organic Advanced Brightening Repair Treatment ($48 in the shop) that I was invited to test and review. The Sweetsation website is worth looking at. The products are biodegradable, cruelty free and made with natural and organic ingredients – there are no parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, artificial fragrance, artificial colorants, retinols, sulfates, petrochemicals, or oxybenzone.
Lumi*Essence Body is meant to visibly correct dark spots caused by sun damage and help even skin tone. The website lists the actives and their functions: kojic acid (helps lighten and reduce the appearance of dark spots); Alpha-Arbutin (skin-lightening agent derived from the leaves of cranberry, blueberry and bearberry shrubs); papaya and pineapple extract (provides intense exfoliation); niacinamide (has an inhibitory effect on the transfer of melanosomes to skin cells, thus it can interrupt the process that causes irregular pigmentation to form); and milk thistle (studies show it to be effective as an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, and for UV protection and repair. It has also been shown to reduce the spread of skin cancer).
Now I am over 50, red-haired, and of Scandinavian descent, so I freckle more than tan. I don’t have a lot of dark spots that displease me, but I don’t mind lightening my freckles to give my skin a more even look, which I feel looks younger, especially as the skin loses elasticity with age. I decided to apply the lotion to only one side of my body – the left leg and arm – so I could compare after four weeks to my right leg and arm. The Sweetsation Lumi*Essence Body treatment has an easy pump to dispense the lotion. The directions are simple: one to two pumps twice a day to the affected area. Simple enough. It smells wonderful: not too strong, not too flowery or fruity. The first whiff starts the “experience,” if you will, and it feels luxurious before I’ve even put any lotion on. The pump dispenses just enough product – not too much, not too little – and it feels nice, not greasy. The lotion absorbs well into the skin.
After four weeks, I do notice a fading of my freckles. I don’t think four weeks is enough time to definitively assess the results since these ingredients typically work gradually (although with longer staying power). But I definitely see a difference. I especially like the improved condition of my skin – not just softer, but smoother. My skin also seems to be more supple and have more “spring-back” when I pinch the tissue.
The Sweetsation packaging is minimal, to reduce waste, and is 100% recyclable. The brand supports and promotes being environmentally responsible and has a recycling rewards program: when you accumulate five empty pieces of Sweetsation packaging, you can mail them back to the company and receive five product samples of your choice, or $10 credit toward a future purchase. I personally find the product packaging to be very attractive. Green and pink labels on white containers; it looks fresh, and the green gives a hint of its organic nature.
I have to confess to being enamored with this company in a very short amount of time. Everything I read on the Sweetsation website sounds like the company knows what it’s doing and cares a lot about what it’s creating. And the ingredients are fantastic. Natalja Millsap, who created this product line, did so for a number of reasons, the biggest being that she was pregnant while using other skincare products and learned in her third month of the dangers to her baby lurking in many of the ingredients. So this product line is very personal. Read the About Us tab for more information on who Natalja is and why she started this line.
From the product ingredients and the packaging design to the mechanics and engineering of this product’s pump, Sweetsation paid close attention to what they produced. I also like how the brand doesn’t oversell itself. I feel this company is presenting itself and its products very honestly and straightforward, which I find as refreshing as its body lotion. The products aren’t the cheapest (which is actually good), nor are they the most expensive (which helps a lot), and I highly recommend them. There are quite a number of products for expectant mothers and for babies (and men!). Sweetsation Therapy, and the Lumi*Essence Brightening Repair Treatment, is worth checking out.
