Lip Stain- a new gloss from tarte

January 28, 2010 Reviewed by Marta 6 Comments
Tarte has finally launched a Lip Stain ($24) based on its wildly popular  tarte Cheek Stain. Although tarte is noted for its green credentials (it was one of our Five Best eco friendly makeup companies last year), its marketing people bring a whiff of the lab to this lip gloss with something called "LipSurgence Technology" that is supposed to increase the moisture of our smackers by 6000%.

Whereas the Cheek Stain majors on fruit extracts, Lip Stain has a peptide, palmitoyl heaxapeptide-14. This appears to have been borrowed from tarte Recreate Wrinkle Rewind Techolnogy. There is also salicornia extract, a coastal growing herb (mainly in western Europe) that has strong antioxidant properties.

Otherwise there are couple of waxes (eg cera alba) and around seven oils, including meadowfoam. Meadowform seeds are 60% omega-9 fatty acids. In practice, it behaves like a safe silicone, adding gloss and helping with the retention of moisture.

Unfortunately, tarte has chosen to include a sweetener called stevioside. On the plus side, it has no calories, but it also has a controversial safety record. In the UK, it is not permitted for use in food. There are numerous studies that suggest it is, amongst other things, a reproductive toxin. On the other hand, the WHO declared in 1999 (I couldn't find anything more recent) that the data wasn't good enough to say one way or another and there are studies that contend that it is relatively safe.

I have tried it and I do love it. The colors are great but for me there weren't enough to choose from. The moisture is incredible. It is very light and it seems to improve the texture of the lips. I bought some at Ulta when they were having a sale just after New Years. I was looking for something that had some staying power but this was not it. It is worth reapplying though. I also bought the cheek stain and really love that. So all in all I do love the product, I just wish it stayed on longer without reapplying. It is very glossy and your lips seem plumper.

    Has anyone tried it yet?

Not a typo - according to that reliable source, Sephora. With my thinner than a snake's lips, it might just make a visible difference.

Is 6000% a typo (that's a lot of zero's)? I would think that if I increased the moisture of my lips to 6000% they'd do more than plump they'd explode :)

    Hi L,
No it doesn't claim to plump lips and there is nothing in it that would really do that.

    Will this plump the lips?
