Woman with glowing skin

The Five Best for Shiny Skin

May 25, 2017 Reviewed by Marta 0 Comments

It’s that time of year when even those of us who don’t typically have oily skin start to shine like the top of the Chrysler Building. If you’re nodding in agreement, you may want to consider choosing a new cleanser or swapping out your go-to cream with a gel moisturizer. These products don’t just sop up excess oil, they prevent it from showing up in the first place. Here’s my Five Best for wiping out shine without dimming your glow.

  • ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Selfie Mask

ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Selfie Mask ($46 in the shop). Expurtise has elevated the humble clay mask to a spa session. Selfie Mask quickly dries as a typical clay mask does to a layer of crusty mud and then rinses away to reveal skin that is matte and clear — selfie ready, in fact. In a formula that is overwhelmingly natural and organic, there’s loads of antioxidants, vitamins (notably C, B5 and E) and plant extracts. Plus, it’s given an anti-aging boost with a peptide that inhibits expression lines and plumping hyaluronic acid. A welcome addition is a seaweed extract that enables capillaries to contract and so may help to reduce broken veins.

  • Dr. Dennis Gross All-in-One Cleanser with Toner

Dr. Dennis Gross All-in-One Cleanser with Toner ($30 in the shop). A handy twofer that cleanses without stripping. Toning witch hazel water teams up with conditioning agents such as jojoba, sunflower seed and grape seed oils and oat amino acids for a smoothed, hydrated — but never shiny — complexion.

  • Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion Oil-Free Moisturizer

Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion Oil-Free Moisturizer ($58 in the shop). This oil-free, gel moisturizer hydrates without added weight or shine. It is incredibly comfortable with great slip and a little goes a long way for a soft, dewy look. The hydrating agent is hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin. Watermelon extract provides free-radical combating antioxidants as glycolic acid, lactic acid and sugar cane gently remove dead skin cells and keep pores from clogging throughout the day. A recent upgrade to this moisturizer is seagrape, which studies have shown to be a powerful antioxidant.

  • Your Best Face Boost Day Cream

Your Best Face Boost Day Cream ($65 in the shop). A lightweight daily moisturizer actually prevents excess oiliness and discourages blemishes. It also tightens and tones the skin and reduces redness. Unlike some moisturizers that never seem to fully absorb into the skin, Boost dries to a natural finish, alone or under makeup. There’s no stinting on the anti-agers either with YBF’s signature free radical fighters and Renovage, for stabilizing our telomeres.

  • Prana SpaCeuticals Purifying Day Lotion SPF 30

Prana SpaCeuticals Purifying Day Lotion SPF 30 ($38 in the shop). Prana just gets sunscreen — texture, cosmetic acceptability, added antioxidants. Purifying Day Lotion, which is a moisturizing but mattifying sunscreen, is no exception. This really is a no-shine block even on a humid summer day in NYC. It gives a clean, matte appearance while preventing blemishes. This all-around product is a must for those with oily or acne-prone skin. There are antioxidants, amino acids and antioxidant plant extracts. I like the clever inclusion of usnea barbata, a lichen with healing and antimicrobial properties.
