The Five Best with Ferulic Acid

February 16, 2017 Reviewed by Marta 1 Comment

Ferulic acid is a wonderful ingredient. It is an antioxidant that generously goes out of its way to make other antioxidants even more potent. Found in the cell walls of plants, ferulic acid can seek and destroy several different types of free radicals. It is more powerful than vitamin C and vitamin E, and it actually elevates the actions of both these ingredients. While the FDA won’t let us call it a sunscreen, it can also prevent UV damage. A total skin win. Ferulic acid remains a fairly uncommon ingredient, but discerning formulators are beginning to make use of it. So much so that I am now able to do my first ever Five Best.

  • Ao Skincare Restore Serum

Ao Skincare Restore Serum ($119.95). Ferulic acid is a great complement to other ingredients in this formula, including skin-plumping peptides like acetyl octapeptide-3 and tripeptide-1. Vitamins B3 (niacinamide) and B5 (panthenol) firm and clarify the skin while sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable form of vitamin C, boosts collagen production and has improved performance thanks to the ferulic acid. For fighting free radicals, ferulic acid is given a helping hand by spin trap. Ao Skincare hails from New Zealand and always includes some exotic, indigenous botanicals. This can be used morning and night.

  • Your Best Face Prep Microdermabrasion

Your Best Face Prep Microdermabrasion ($80 in the shop). This multitasking mask and exfoliator is a well-deserved perennial favorite with the Truth In Aging Community. Think skin that is radiantly smooth. Hero ingredient Matrixyl 3000 boosts collagen, the skin-brightening peptide TEGO Pep 4 balances uneven pigmentation, and microdermabrasion crystals polish the skin to a healthy glow. The ferulic acid? It boosts the antioxidant power of turmeric.

  • Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic & Retinol Fortifying Neck Emulsion

Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic & Retinol Fortifying Neck Emulsion ($75 in the shop). This was awarded our best new product launch in 2015, and I still use it regularly. This neck cream works. Dr. Gross is a ferulic enthusiast and uses it in many of his products to buffer the retinol, creating formulas that are gentle yet very effective. There are also some other DDG favorites here, including watermelon, ellagic acid, phospholipids and sphingolipids.

  • Skinfinite Advanced C20+ Serum

Skinfinite Advanced C20+ Serum ($65 in the shop). As mentioned, ferulic acid helps vitamin C perform better. Skinfinite has combined 20 percent stabilized l-ascorbic acid, ferulic acid and phloretin to work synergistically. Another interesting ingredient is lutein, which can filter the high-energy, blue wavelengths of light from the visible-light spectrum by as much as 90 percent. This high-impact vitamin C serum is to be used a couple of times a week to even out skin tone.

  • Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic & Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum

Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic & Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum ($68 in the shop) This gel-like serum treats a myriad of eye-area concerns, targeting and reducing crow's feet, dark circles and puffiness. Free radical-reducing ferulic is alongside regenerating retinol in this unusual eye serum. It also has a collagen-boosting peptide called TEG0 Pep 4-17. It’s a cult-favorite eye treatment for a reason — this stuff works well for all ages.
