Sometimes as TIA reader and reviewers we talk about products that are good and effective but not necessarily for purists. This time TIA asked me to try a product that is most decidedly for purists, The Organic Pharmacy's Rose Shower Gel ($45).
I was not familiar with The Organic Pharmacy, a UK brand (that seems to have distribution here, too, as well as online). It is a very appealing line and a website full of information. The company was started by a homeopathic pharmacist with the launch of a retail shop in London's Chelsea district in 2002, and has a clear orientation to non-toxic, organic ingredients. The product line is very extensive and includes products for face, body, hair, bath, sun care, baby, makeup, etc. The company also offers treatments and has several health supplements.
But back to the Rose Shower Gel, which turns out to be one of eight bath products available. Other include scrubs, soaks, oils and gels. It's a simple product packaged in a simple plastic tube. As you'd expect, the first thing to notice is the rose scent - but it's not too heady and seems very natural. The gel is brown, fairly thick, and like many a natural product, doesn't produce lots of lather on application. It is mild and gentle, and left my dry skin feeling smooth and clean.
The best news for the TIA reader is the ingredients list, which as I mentioned is really straightforward and consistent with the brand's name and philosophy, free of artificial preservatives, colors, and fragrances, and of petrochemicals. Algin (seaweed) and aloe are the first ingredients listed. Carageenan is a seaweed-derived thickener. For cleansing there are olive oil and coconut derivatives; and of course there are rose, geranium, rose hip, and marigold, and other nice things like bilberry, grapefruit seed extract, and vitamins C and E.
Perhaps the best thing The Organic Pharmacy does on its site is to provide an ingredients glossary so that buyers can look up any ingredient in the line, and understand what it is and what it's used for. I think this is something more manufacturers should try!
The product is $45 (6.6 ounces/200 ml), which isn't inexpensive, but I think many readers of all ages, and especially those with sensitive or dry skin, would enjoy using it. I personally would be interested in trying some other products in the bath line - I have my eye on the Lemon & Eucalyptus Gel and the Cleopatra Body Scrub in particular.
