Cosmetic chemist and founder of TheraNeem, an offshoot of Organix South Inc, Autumn Blum, was approached by a man at a 1997 lab auction who asked her if she could develop a natural shampoo with neem oil. “Sure,” she said. Only thing, she didn’t know what neem was.

Today, Autum and her team of apparent flower children (e.g. Trinity Ava, Faith Hubbard) have turned an obscure plant with an array of uses—from spermicide, to tooth cleaning, to pesticide—into a thriving natural beauty company.

The Good

Though not overly exposed, and not readily available in the US (it only grows here in Florida), the evergreen tree, neem, grown in exotic countries contains many properties beneficial to skin when applied topically. TheraNeem sources their certified organic neem from India, where they claim to pay farmers 10% more than market value to promote fair trade. In addition to neem, which is a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, TheraNeem products contain beneficial naturals such as shea butter, oak moss, aloe gel, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil.

In India, neem is often called the “toothbrush tree”, and locals clean their teeth by chewing twigs. TheraNeem harnessed neem’s apparent oral bacteria fighting power and sells neem toothpaste.

The Bad

Though most TheraNeem products are vastly all-natural, the TheraNeem Organix Men’s Lotion contains preservative phenoxyethanol. Lack of fluoride in the toothpaste might concern some worried about possible tooth decay. Jimmy loved TheraNeem’s woodsy, natural scents, but thought they might deter some women, unless possibly, you’re of the aforementioned flower children set.

The Truth

Jimmy called the Botanical Fading Cream a “miracle in a bottle.” Neem is not FDA approved and its benefits are still considered anecdotal. But based on testimony on this site alone, the anecdotal evidence is strong, and in the very least it’s clear that TheraNeem is committed to producing products the all natural, environmentally, and socially responsible way.
