It might be the holiday season, but for me ’tis the season for multitasking. There are days when I’m spinning plates – scribbling Christmas cards, basting a turkey, cleaning under the guestroom bed, all whilst trying to swig a glass of Prosecco. You get the picture. An indulgent beauty regimen can be the casualty of the demands that the season makes on our time, so I’ve put together a few quick fixes that will give our frazzled faces and neglected bodies an instant lift.
If you have only one thing to smear on your face, try a good tinted moisturizer with SPF. If that sounds like an oxymoron, then trust me. I have at least two suggestions that carry out all their functions with aplomb. A good all-rounder is 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer SPF20 ($32 in the TIA shop). You get a three-in-one moisturizer/foundation/sunscreen combo that does no evil and a whole lot of good – the pigments are made of fruit powders and they have thrown in some antioxidants. It glides on smoothly and gives even coverage. If you don’t like wearing makeup and prefer a natural look, this is your new favorite product. There’s also the new Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($45). The lightweight texture goes on smoothly with a hint of color that does not interfere with the foundation or concealer that I normally wear. It can certainly be worn on its own in a pinch and the antioxidant-rich formula will stand in for your serum as well.
How about one moisturizer for face and body? Skin-Lasting Hydrating Moisturizer ($28) is a simple formula (with no nasties) that is an excellent, time-saving multitasker. Its unusual formula, a liquid spray, makes it super fast to apply and it does double duty as an exfoliator as well as moisturizer and it serves for face, neck, body and hands. If you are traveling, just grab this and an eye cream and you are good to go.
Most of those so-called rescue products tend to leave you high and dry. Not so Skin Nutrition’s Complexion Revitalizing Serum ($70 in the TIA shop). This is a unique product designed as a “rescue” treatment to give dull, lifeless or stressed-out skin an immediate complexion boost. While the treatment can be used for a quick fix pick-me-up, it is formulated so that it can also be used daily as an anti-aging treatment.
I can think of two face masks that instantly revitalize and refresh, La Vie Celeste’s Restorative Exfoliating Gel ($60 in the TIA shop) and Royal Nectar’s mask with bee venom ($65 in the TIA shop). Now don’t tell me that you don’t have time to lounge around in a mask. My picks disappear into the skin in a couple of minutes so that you can go about your business without frightening small children.
The best instant-effect eye cream I have recently come across is the aptly named Retrospect Flash Firm Eye Gel. It helps puffy under eyes a treat with a rollerball applicator that is more than just a gimmick – it gives an instant cooling and refreshing swipe of the gel in one swipe under the eye and towards the temple.
Finding time to exercise and keep in shape is hard enough at the best of times. So if getting back to the gym is going to have to wait until you write up your list of New Year’s resolutions, you could consider this quick fix. The 360 Muscle Stimulation machine will get you fit and toned in 15 minutes. If “electrical muscle stimulation” brings to mind a tone-a-matic infomercial, check this out. I’ve actually tried it and found it impressive.
