OK, these may not be the most glamorous. But when suffering a breakout or bout of acne, you just want a really reliable workhorse. These breakout busters are all worthy of calling up to the podium. They will bring your skin under control and be part of your preventative regimen as well. The Truth In Aging Olympics Gold Medal goes to the almost miraculous Envy Medical Skin Clarifying Acne Treatment Pads. The Silver goes to Sevani’s Complexion Corrector and you’ll always keep breakouts at bay with Bronze winner, Sirius Sonic.

Envy Medical Skin Clarifying Acne Treatment Pads ($25 in the TIA shop). Our tester had a serious acne outbreak (most unfair at the age of 42) and none of the products recommended by her derm worked. We gave her a pack of Envy pads (same folks who are behind Lumixyl) and she used them several times a day. Her skin seriously improved in a few days and was transformed within three weeks. Saturated with salicylic acid, aloe and witch hazel. The formula isn’t for purists, but it sure works. Read the full review

Sevani Advanced Complexion Corrector ($39 for 2oz in the TIA shop). This is a light spray – the last thing you want with a breakout is gunky cream. The deceptively simple formula is dominated by soothing aloe juice and willow bark, a BHA that is a natural exfoliant, as well as a source of salicilin, flavonoids, and tannins. Panthenol (a vitamin B) reduces itching and inflammation, while another B, niancinamide, has been shown in studies to reduce rosacea. Sevani is ever mindful of our anti-aging needs and has added in some botanical antioxidants in the form of lotus and rooibos extracts. The scent is a barely discernible rose. This product as actually great for rosacea as well as acne. Read the full review

Sirius Sonic ($49 in the TIA shop). Electronic brushes are essential at any age and daily use will help keep the skin smooth and clear. Brushing is a great way to gently exfoliate to remove dry skin, keep pores unclogged and breakouts at bay. This is one of the best basic skincare investments to make at any age.  The Sirius has two brushes (regular and sensitive), a toning attachment, and two foam heads for applying exfoliator and moisturizer.
