Patti Collier signed the handwritten note that came with a package of her Veris skincare line “youthfully yours”. Sweet. Ms Collier started Veris when she (and her brutally candid young daughter) started to notice her aging skin and after she had searched in vain for an anti-wrinkle alternative to fillers or Botox.
Until now, I hadn’t come across the Veris line with its three-step VeriSystem – cleanse & balance; repair & restore; protect & prevent. The first thing that struck me is that Patti Collier’s aversion to fillers extends to her formulations. Her skincare line gets straight to the point, focusing on a refreshingly short list of ingredients, with the key actives taking, well, a key role.
A good example is the Red Tea Serum ($42), one of the step 3 protect & prevent products. It has purified water, hyaluronic acid, red tea extract, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexyglycerin. It doesn’t get more streamlined than that. Not to mention that I am always grateful when I can spell the first three ingredients in a potion.
Red tea is Rooibos (also spelled rooibus). It is known as red tea (because it can be drunk as an infusion, not because it is a member of the tea family – it is actually a pea). Of the 10 identified flavonoid antioxidants in rooibos, aspalathin is one of three found in the greatest quantities and it is unique to red tea. Aspalathin is a free radical scavenger, although according to one study
it is less potent than vitamin E. According to another test
, it seems that the ability of aspalathin to penetrate the skin is dose dependent – so the fact that it figures prominently in Veris Red Tea Serum is probably a plus.
Similarly, Super Hyaluronic Cream ($36) is a pared back formula that has jojoba, apricot kernel oil, squalane
(stipulated from olive), hyaluronic acid
and not much else. Apricot kernel oil is a good antioxidant as it is comprised mostly (about 70%) of oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid as well as plenty of vitamin E.
Over the coming weeks, several of us will be testing some of the products from Veris (which, incidentally, means spring of life) and look out for some Dare To Try Its for readers to review.
