Votre Vu Habitude Men's Daily Face Creme SPF 15

Is a Solution for:
Sun Protection for Face, Face Care for Men

In a world where there's more mens-specific SPF moisturizers than I imagined available (considering five years ago when it was slim pickings), Votre Vu Habitude Men's Daily Face Creme SPF 15 ($35) has been trumping other brands thanks to its celebrity following (Matt Damon, James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt). But is it all hype?

Votre Vu Habitude Men's Daily Face Creme SPF 15 is a product of the luxury French brand, and quite new in the American market. For some reason, I knew I was going to get involved with something a little fragrant, something rich, maybe some organic love thrown in (it is French, after all). So it wasn't a big surprise when I actually tested the product.

The main active ingredient is the sunscreen agent of avobenzone (butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), which you may know offers full-broad spectrum protection from UV rays. So far, so good. There's also octinoxate, which will also help prevent sun damage, though not offering broad spectrum. At least it's there to be avobenzone's sidekick. While there's only SPF 15, this is good for daily use if you're not going to be in the sun all day. But what I truly love about Habitude Men's Daily Face Creme SPF 15 is that it's sort of jack-of-all-trades. Not only does it contain fruit acids to gently exfoliate, but there's jojoba and chamomile to restore and nourish. It is also paraben free.

Another notable ingredient in Votre Vu Habitude Men's Daily Face Creme SPF 15 is shea butter. Not only is it known to potentially provide UV sun protection, but it helps calm the skin, moisturizes and repairs. In fact, it's one of the world's richest emollients, chockfull of Vitamin A, E and F (F consists of two essential fatty acids, linoleic and alpha-linoleic acids, which help revitalize dry skin). Geraniol oil also helps as an astringent and opening pores. Lots of stuff going on here.

I do have to admit that, when applying, it went on rather rich and a little fragrant (I called it, didn't I?) but it's only because I like lighter lotions that I thought it was too heavy. It's perfect for those who have dry skin. In fact, it's not a bad daily moisturizer all-around for anyone who's not OCD picky like me.

Avobenzone protects against UVA, not UVB. As such it is NOT "broad spectrum". Broad spectrum means an ingredient covers the UVA and UVB wavelengths.

This product is also NOT photostable. Avobenzone needs to be stabilised, usually with octocrylene but it can be partially stabilised with oxybenzone and tinosorb S or tinosorb M. The combination of ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and avobenzone is even worse. What this means is that the UVA protection breaks down in a very short period of time, often around 20 minutes after exposure to UV.

Not good at all if protecting your skin from UV rays is important!
