What Is Dry Skin?
Dry skin is caused when skin is not properly hydrated, which can happen due to a number of reasons.
What Causes Dry Skin?
Dry skin is most typically caused by environmental factors, like cold air and low humidity, which explains why dry skin symptoms, like peeling, cracking, plus itchy body, hands and feet, are typically most acute during winter months. That said, dry skin can also be a result of sun overexposure.
Dry, itchy skin is also one of the unfortunate side effects of menopause. As estrogen levels decrease, so too does the stimulation and retention of collagen and oils. Both are necessary for skin hydration.
Certain medicines can trigger dry skin as well. Retinoid use, to treat acne and smooth wrinkles, can also result in dry, itchy skin.
How to Prevent Dry Skin
Protection from the sun, cold and low humidity is essential to preventing dry skin. Since dry skin and wrinkles go hand in hand, year-round sunscreen usage, along with an effective moisturizer, can prevent dry skin. A healthy diet including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, B-3 and E is also believed to keep skin supple, plump and youthful. Those hot showers that feel so good when you come in from the cold can contribute to dry, itchy skin, so are best avoided. Keep the water lukewarm and remember to exfoliate during and moisturize after showers. Use a hand lotion after washing. And, whatever you do, avoid soaps and cleansers with detergents and other harsh chemicals, which can cause dry, itchy skin.
Effective Ingredients to Combat Dry Skin
Keralytics like urea, allantoin and lactic acid and salicylic acid exfoliate and soften skin’s natural keratin, making them powerful ingredients to prevent dry skin. Glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, otherwise known as hyaluronic acid, are also ingredients to look for to combat dry skin.
Solutions for Dry Skin
Putting socks or gloves on over cream-slathered dry feet or dry hands overnight is a nice trick to soften and smooth. There are also numerous exfoliators, creams and serums that can help slough dead skin and add moisture to dry skin.
