What Is Dull Skin?

Dull skin is one of the most common skincare complaints. When people talk about dull skin, they generally are describing skin that lacks radiance or glow like that associated with young, healthy skin. Dull skin tone is often the catchall term used to also describe related issues like uneven skin texture or tone.

What Causes Dull Skin?

Dull skin tone is typically a result of poor circulation. Common factors that cause dull skin include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, dehydration and poor diet. Basically any triggers that deprive your skin of much-needed oxygen and nutrients will result in dull skin tone. Lack of exfoliation — the sloughing off of dead skin cells — can also cause dull skin. Dull skin is also often one of the first signs of aging, as skin renewal decreases about 7% every 10 years.

How to Prevent Dull Skin

The best way to prevent dull skin is to avoid triggers like smoking, and by eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and drinking plenty of water. They will also help prevent age-related dull skin tone. Starting a smart anti-aging skin regimen of exfoliation and antioxidant-rich products in one’s 30s can also be an effective way to prevent dull skin.

Effective Ingredients to Combat Dull Skin

Glycolic acid is a member of the alpha hydroxy-acid (AHA) family that is an effective exfoliator and a typical ingredient in chemical peels. Combining AHAs with a BHA like salicylic acid can also work well to exfoliate and prevent dull skin. Look for vitamin C, too, and antioxidant-rich ingredients including blueberries and green tea (found in natural anti-aging skincare products and also in a fruit and vegetable-rich diet).

Solutions for Dull Skin

A healthy diet, plenty of water and sleep plus a skincare regimen of glycolic acid exfoliating masks and peels, vitamin C and other brightening serums plus antioxidant-rich cleansers, creams and lotions. Regular facial brushing can also be a great dull skin solution to keep skin rosy and bright. Wear mineral-based makeup, which perks up dull skin with a natural-looking glow.
