I was recently offered the chance to test one of the newer Your Best Face Private Reserve oils, and I chose the Energy Blend over the Comfort Blend (the Comfort Blend has a vanilla scent, which makes me crave cookies... not good after a healthful breakfast or before going to bed).

YBF Private Reserve Energy Blend’s ($75 in the shop) essential oil combo (yuzu, juniper, vetiver, black cumin and rosewood) definitely has a more masculine vibe, which I don’t mind. To an extent, it’s a moot point because the initial aromatherapy fragrance gives away very quickly to the far more pronounced YBF signature spin trap almond smell, which I also don’t mind. The very first whiff is strongest with the black cumin and citrusy yuzu giving it an almost savory, spicy scent (safer than cookies).

The main oil is meadowfoam seed oil, which – aside from being odorless – is known for its excellent ability to stabilize other oils blended with it, thereby making preservatives pretty unnecessary and (thankfully) absent from this formulation. It’s also an excellent oil for preventing moisture loss, since it really binds to and stays on the skin.

Your first impulse may be to disagree with this statement, since the oil feels a little viscous when first applied and doesn’t absorb as quickly as other oils (argan, for example), but give it a minute and you’ll be left with a nice, soft, healthy glow. Though it didn’t leave my skin feeling greasy, I did find that it was a no-no on my forehead in the a.m. Even with a sparing single drop for my entire face and neck, my bangs would suffer from greasy hair syndrome shortly after.

I should tell you that even though I’m late 50s, I still have an oily T-zone and breakouts (particularly of the cystic variety) on my chin, so coming around to oils was a slow process... I remember a  facialist back in the 80s trying to convince me to use facial oils, and I thought she was nuts. But now I just love the way my skin feels when I use them, and I don’t ever find that my skin feels oilier or breaks out more than usual. Beyond the meadowfoam seed oil, I was wondering if the essential oils in the formula had any skin active properties beyond just giving the Energy Blend its quickly disappearing fragrance, and indeed they do. I happened to have chosen my blend well for my skin type!

According to aromatherapy and essential oil guides, yuzu is antibacterial; juniper is a natural antiseptic, an acne treatment, increases circulation, and reduces fluid retention; vetiver is good for acne-prone or oily skin, reduces inflammation and aids in cell regeneration; black cumin is a detoxifier, age spot reducer, antibacterial and increases circulation; and rosewood is anti-acne, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and a tissue regenerator. Based on this, I’d say the Energy Blend YBF treatment oil would be a good one to try if your skin tends to be oily and breakout prone, even though it’s not specifically formulated or marketed as such, and I had no problems during the six-weeks-plus I was using it.

Now because the Spin Trap and Lipochroman-6 are more preventative than regenerating in that they keep nasty aging things from happening to your skin, rather than rebuilding your skin, I would not expect to see miraculous wrinkle reduction, uplifted jowls, or even a notable reduction of dark spots. Private Reserve is more of a layering product to add that extra bit of moisture and protection to other products.

I first tried using it over Living Nature's Hydrating Toning Gel ($35 in the shop), courtesy of Discover With Marta, and that worked very nice. Now, I’ve moved on to putting it over Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair Booster Serum ($75 in the shop), and yowza! Loving it. The Juice Beauty by itself is doing great things but isn’t very moisturizing, but with Private Reserve layered over it, my skin is looking fantastic. YBF does actually suggest applying the oil before other products, but it seems to me that serums should go first so they can penetrate better with the oil then going on top to seal it all in, so that’s what I’m sticking with.

One more thing that should be noted is that both yuzu and cumin are photo sensitizers so you should definitely use sunscreen over your YBF Private Reserve Energy Blend during the day.
