By Beth H.

As a 39-year-old woman with fair skin, I have been battling with an uneven skin tone for nearly 20 years. My discoloration has been deemed melasma, hyper- and hypo-pigmentation, sun damage and good old-fashioned freckles. While I don't expect to rid myself of every last spot, I am seeking out a product to even my skin tone and bring forth a more luminous appearance.

I am a big fan of Your Best Face (YBF) and was delighted to be selected to try the new Brightening Concentrate ($32 in the shop). There are seven ingredients to be exact, of which kojic dipalmitate is the brightening star. According to the biotech company, this is a more stable form of industry favorite kojic acid, with excellent compatibility with other cosmetic ingredients, light and heat stability and better inhibition of melanin production (the pigment that produces the darkening of our skin).

The packaging is simple and easy to use. It comes in an airless pump, and I found one pump to be sufficient to cover all of my problem areas. I didn't detect much of a scent, and the application is definitely smooth and silky. I purposefully only used the concentrate on the left side of my face, so I could really see changes (or reactions) from the product. I applied it at night before any other product, usually to clean skin, but in truth there were nights when I applied it without washing my face (eek!).

I am happy to report that there were no reactions, and at the end of my four-week trial, I've noticed the discolored portion of my face is definitely one shade lighter. My skin tone is more even, lending itself to easier blending and a brighter complexion.

So, in my humble opinion, this works! And the fact that I can layer it with other skin care products is tremendous. I think this would be a great addition to a daily peel system or bi-weekly exfoliation in combating those pesky dark spots. I will continue to use YBF Brightening Concentrate, but now on my entire face and in conjunction with other heavy hitters. I hope to continue to see results with longer use.
