Through my (now many) years as a TIA follower, the site has introduced me to a number of terrific, often profoundly innovative, effective and exciting skincare product lines and brands.  But I’m quite sure that the very first standout it made me aware of, and definitely the first to become a staple in my shopping cart and bathroom cabinet, was the community-beloved Your Best Face.  I was an early convert to their eye cream stalwart, Correct, and remain a devoted fan of the exfoliator, Prep. I’ve used YBF concentrates, creams, and serums (I love Restore) – among them Control, YBF’s overall anti-aging serum – off and on over several years. So I was immediately interested in the offer to test the YBF Control ($160 in the shop) in its new formula in December.

Shortly after I started my trial, Truth in Aging began posting its 2018 product winners. And in a December 12 post TIA anointed the new-formula YBF Control the year’s Best All Round Serum. I completely concur with this assessment – in fact the most concise way for me to write this review would be simply: “What she said.”

All-Round is precisely the point. YBF Control provides a great general-purpose solution for the usual litany of concerns:  fine lines, brightening, skin texture and firmness. I used the product for just over four weeks, and for the purposes of the trial, both morning and night. The packaging says it is for day and/or night use, as you wish.  And I agree: it is light and fluid enough to use with day creams and under makeup, but potent enough to use at night as well. Just about a month in and with the arrival of colder and drier weather I am very pleased with its performance. I specifically noted its brightening and firming qualities, and found my skin feeling elastic and looking – well, dewy….not a word that usually comes to mind over 60.

The main difference and vast improvement I noted versus the old Control – which was always an effective product – was its feel and texture. The shortcoming of the earlier formulation was a thick texture that went on too heavily; it didn’t seem to absorb easily and just felt gloppy. The new product has an ideal texture, with a pleasant degree of slip, and applies smoothly. It feels great on the skin. (And it does retain that mysterious but pleasant almond-y scent that TIA says comes from spintrap.) It’s also newly packaged in a dark glass pump bottle (versus the old canister style pump) that is easy to use.

On the subject of ingredients, the TIA writeup analyzes Control’s impressive array of actives that include peptides and antioxidants galore, as well as couple of more unusual moisturizing and regenerating ingredients. At $160 for 1.7 oz/50 ml, I can’t think of a product in this price range I’ve tried that boasts so many active ingredients with such a range of benefits.

I am very glad to be reacquainted with Control in its new and more appealing identity and will continue to use it post-trial. For me, with my trial complete I think it will be my default daytime serum. But as a multipurpose solution, Control could be useful for people with a variety of concerns and at different ages. The range of ingredients and benefits means that it could replace an assortment of more targeted treatments, especially for those just beginning to notice and address skin aging issues. Younger folks more focused on prevention might find it overkill for day but would like it as a nighttime serum, while the middle-aged or older could use it daytime only, or twice a day. As usual, Your Best Face strives, and really succeeds, in delivering maximum benefit for the price.
